[WIN XP PRO SP3 desktop]

I've been experiencing many BSOD, "Third master hard drive error" and "A disk read error occurred. Press C-A-D to restart" error messages. Here is what I have done so far to fix this:

1) Vacuumed the inside of the box
2) Replaced CMOS battery

3) Ensured connection from hdd to the mb was secure
4) Ran Memtest86+; zero errors
5) Booted up Hiren’s and ran the IBM/Hitachi hdd surface test; zero errors
6) Boot up normally off the hdd and it stopped at that Windows screen, the blue sky and rolling green grass image, pointer works but no icons, no system tray, no left click, no right click, no c-a-d
7) Re-booted. Same thing.

8) Re-booted Hiren’s, went to Command prompt, then to c:\windows\system32>.

9) Inserted Windows System Repair Disk into dvd drive

10) Entered sfc[space]/scannow at that c:\windows\system32> prompt and got the error message: “Windows File Protection could not initiate a scan of protected system files. The specific error code is 0x000006ba. [The RPC Server is unavailable.]”

Thank you for any assistance in fixing this machine and/or getting SFC to launch. I'm no techie but I have a hunch it's something to do with my BIOS.

Hard drive error messages....are intended to pinpoint the problem area, as detected by Windows.

Thank you but I don't think so. I did not use nLite and I since I'm stuck on that Windows screen I described, I cannot get into my system to update the registry.

Thank you for your response but I don't quite understand. That my hard drive passed the IBM/Hitachi hdd surface test isn't enough to conclude that my hdd is all right? Also, I am trying to run /sfc[space]/scannow but I'm having trouble doing so. Would running it not help me here?.

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
List last 10 Event Viewer log
  List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size.

Click Go and paste the content into your next post.

Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy taking care to post the link of the snapshot in your next post.

Go to Piriform's website, and download the free version on the left.  Click Download from Piriform.com (the FileHippo link requires an extra click). Or if you want to use a portable version of Speccy (which doesn't require installation), click the builds page link and download the portable version. You will now be asked where you want to save the file. The best place to put it is the Desktop, as it will be easy to find later.

After the file finishes downloading, you are ready to run Speccy. If you downloaded the installer, simply double-click on it and follow the prompts until installation is complete. If you downloaded the portable version, you will need to unzip it before use. Right-click the ZIP file and click Extract all. Click Next. Open up the extracted folder and double-click on Speccy.

Once inside Speccy, it will look similar to this (with your computer's specifications, of course): p22004369.gif

Now, at the top, click File > Publish Snapshot. You will see the following prompt:

p22004371.gif

Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard

p22004372.gif

Now, once you are back in the forum topic you are posting in, click the p22004370.gif button. Right-click in the empty space of the Reply box and click Paste. Then, click Add Reply below the Reply box.

Louis,

Once again, thank you for your reply but when I boot up it stops at that Windows screen, the blue sky and rolling green grass image. The pointer works but there are no icons, no system tray, no start button, no left click, no right click and no c-a-d. Given that, I don't see how I can download anything. Come to think of it, I think I already have MiniToolBox on my machine but I don't know how I can get to it.

Louis

I cannot believe I was able to boot into safe mode with networking. I tried booting into safe mode last week and all it did was re-boot over and over.

My computer:
[WIN XP PRO SP3, desktop]

My PC is custom built. Here are some facts:
Pentium D processor
American Megatrends 0506 1/16/06 BIOS
3072M usable installed memory
Bus Clock: 200 megahertz
Multi-core: (2 total); Not hyper-threaded
16K primary memory cache
2048K secondary
ASUS p5LD2 Deluxe motherboard
AMD Radeon HD Series 3400 Graphics Card
Corsair CX600 600W ATX12V v2.3 80 plus bronze certified PSU
WD Caviar Green Sata HDD 1T

Is my next step to click on my Firefox desktop icon and download MiniToolBox and do as you described?

Thanks, Louis.

Louis,

I believe you highlighted items in my post, above. Should I be doing something about the highlighted items?

Thanks, Louis.

No...I just highlight certain things so that they easily come to one's attention.

Installed AV...errors that need investigation...registry cleaners and other suspect files...and so on.

Is this XP install activated?

I suggest that you download/install SeaTools for Windows and run the short generic diagnostic test.

Hello Louis,

Sorry, I'm not sure what you mean when you ask "Is this XP install activated?"

Also, since my HDD is Western Digital, I ran the WD Lifeguard Diagnostic (it took over six hours) and the results were "PASS" and "HEALTH STATUS: GOOD". If you still want me to run SeaTools For Windows, I will.

Thanks again, Louis.

You did the right thing...I was hasty with my suggestion of SeaTools :).

Although you cited errors indicating a hard drive situation...I don't see any error documentation of such.

I find it hard to believe that anyone can have Windows installed and not know what Windows activation is.  You have an error indicating that there is a problem.

"Error: (03/26/2016 11:01:12 PM) (Source: Windows Product Activation) (User: )
Description: An error occurred while the wizard was checking the current Windows product license. Error Code: 4 0x80070005"
