:) :spam:  :) B) :) B) :inlove: :trumpet:   :spam:

Anyway... Nice site, I came here through google reading the Understanding Spyware article. I tried the programs that I didn't already have from what was recommended. I've been having some trouble with a browser hijacker, I've spent nearly all of my Time awake today (or what is now yesterday... but then again, if I said today, it would be even more accurate, but only in the thought that today meant this Time period of 12:00:00 AM - 11:59:59 PM, in case someone would think that since it's dark outside they can't view it as a day...) trying to get rid of it.

It will constantly change my homepage to http://find4u.net.index.htm, while the true default homepage is http://us8.hpwis.com/, which should take me to netscape.net or something like that. When ever I change it, it'll change back every few minutes. Quite a pest.

This was my first log:

However, I was trying to sign up for a member of these forums, but I couldn't get into my mail account as something was wrong with the network (or so I thought, it was actually because my security settings were on High, and thus had problems with the site and my cookies information getting through--or something), so I lost patience battling with this day to night, and tried to delete/fix what I thought was the problem. Which was the following:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://find4u.net/sp.htm
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://find4u.net/index.htm

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://find4u.net/sp.htm
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://find4u.net/index.htm

Which I then thought it might have worked, which I then later found, it didn't.

What you see here:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://find4u.net/index.htm

Things like that will reoccur and dissapear often which each scan, from 0 to 5 similar to that, probably because of me constantly going to internet options and setting the home page to default, and also because of Spybot: Seek and Destroy's notification pop-up and me disaproving of the said "changes". Safeguard did the same and kept the default page as the default page for quite a while with the pop-up asking if I would approve or dissapprove the changes (of the homepages), in which I again didn't approve of. Eh... it did the same until I first deleted/fixed those said files after the scan.

Anyway... any instructions that could easily follow that would lead to the remedy of this problem would most likely be greatly appreciated from myself.

Blargh... thanks, and good night. :flowers: :bike: :P :woot:

Hi TimeNoise,
Just to add a couple of things:
To completely rid yourself of Wild Tangent you should also look for Web Driver in Add/Remove. AdAware and Spybot S&D will clean up most of it but will leave the directories behind. So in addition to deleting the diretory in Program Files as recommended by Lobos, navigate to C:\Windows and delete the "wt" directory.

Wild Tangent is actually optional to fix, especially if you downloaded and are using the Game Channel. But I recommend its removal. The WebDriver is shady and could download any "upgrade" without your knowledge. In my personal experience they thought a popup module was an upgrade. And there is another media player sometimes associated with WT--Viewpoint. Reommend you uninstall it also while in Add/Remove.

The other point is, yes, you can overdo security settings and antispyware software. In Internet Explorer I leave the slider at medium and customized. As long as you have ActiveX set to prompt or disable you will know what is being downloaded and can decide whether to allow it or not (this is for ActiveX only and won't prevent spyware that is bundled with something you download voluntarily). You'll be less restricted and can surf more freely that way. To set ActiveX as I recommend:

1. With Internet Explorer open, click Tools>Internet Options>Security tab.
2. Click Custom Level.
3. Set "Download Signed ActiveX Controls" to prompt.
4. Set "Download Unsigned ActiveX Controls" to prompt or disable.
5. Set "Initializ and script ActiveX Controls not marked as Safe" to disable.
6. The two ActiveX settings below that can be set to enable or prompt. If set to prompt, tho, they might soon drive you crazy.
7. Click OK, then OK again to exit Internet Options.

You also don't want to use the Trusted Zone in IE. Will explain all that further once you're cleaned up and hope you'll pardon the interuption.

The fate of all mankind, I see

Is in the hands of fools
