I noticed that my internet settings were being reset to use a proxy server automatically.

So I downloaded and ran Malwarebytes.

It found 27 items. I removed them and restarted my computer.

And NOW, IE is opening a million windows at startup.

What now? Did I install a fake version of malwarebytes?

I fixed it. The problem was advertserve.com. This site claims to remove it, but when I ran the free trial version it seemed very unprofessional. You have to buy it to remove anything and I didn't feel comfortable doing that.

I'm not a patient person, so I did the "keep my files" version of a Windows system reset and that solved it.
