The title says it all. A few weeks ago, boot-up and log in starting taking up to 10 minutes. I've run a variety of malware/spyware scans; all of which find nothing. Any help would be appreciated and thank you kindly in advance.

Hello there,

Have you tried booting your computer in Safe Mode and see if you face the same issue?

Also do you have more than one Antivirus / Malware software installed in your computer? If yes, then you should only have one AV installed at a time as multiple AV's could cause the computer to be sluggish and slow.

Hope this helps!

I have/had the same problems over the years. I have an Dell Inspiron 546 computer that came with a Windows Vista Business and since the timing was so close to Windows 7 coming out, as part of the purchase, they gave me a free install of Windows 7 Pro when that did hit the market. It happened, a tech came to my house and did the upgrade and left me with the disc and a key code. Over the years, I had to  on  more than one occasion  reinstall the O/S because of problems that were going on with the computer and "slow" was one of them. Anyhow one of those occasions came again about 10 days ago. Rather than go through all of what you are probably going through now and learning that I could use the Windows 7 Pro disc that I have to do an installation to a clean hard drive and probably a reinstall over the existing program, here is what I opted to do & will do from now on:  I purchased a DBAN wipe disc to wipe the hard drive clean and it cost me $5.55 free shipping on line at a popular online store. I got that disc and used it and ended up with a clean blank hard drive. The Windows 7 Pro disc that I have wouldn't work after three tries because it developed a crack in it, so back to the internet I go. I found a deal at a popular auction website that showed several sources selling Windows 7 installation discs and the only qualification was that you have to have the key code which I do. I bought that disc at $5.55 free shipping and the disc came today (11/9). I put it in my machine and saw that it gives the option of installing several versions of Windows 7, So I entered mine, Windows 7 Pro hit the button and it downloaded my fresh Windows 7 Pro on the clean hard drive and my unit is working fine and dandy again. Now I have two new assets; A brand new DBAN wipe disc and a brand new Windows 7 Pro installation disc. It might be for you as well, it's your choice. JUST MAKE SURE YOU SAVE YOU WORK BEFORE YOU WIPE!

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
List last 10 Event Viewer log
  List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size.

Click Go and paste the content into your next post.

Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy taking care to post the link of the snapshot in your next post.

Go to Piriform's website, and download the free version on the left.  Click Download from Piriform.com (the FileHippo link requires an extra click). Or if you want to use a portable version of Speccy (which doesn't require installation), click the builds page link and download the portable version. You will now be asked where you want to save the file. The best place to put it is the Desktop, as it will be easy to find later.

After the file finishes downloading, you are ready to run Speccy. If you downloaded the installer, simply double-click on it and follow the prompts until installation is complete. If you downloaded the portable version, you will need to unzip it before use. Right-click the ZIP file and click Extract all. Click Next. Open up the extracted folder and double-click on Speccy.

Once inside Speccy, it will look similar to this (with your computer's specifications, of course): p22004369.gif

Now, at the top, click File > Publish Snapshot. You will see the following prompt:

p22004371.gif

Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard

p22004372.gif

Now, once you are back in the forum topic you are posting in, click the p22004370.gif button. Right-click in the empty space of the Reply box and click Paste. Then, click Add Reply below the Reply box.

I would uninstall the McAfee programs, all of them, then just use the Microsoft Security Essentials program for AV.  Having multiple AV programs installed is known to cause the symptoms that you speak of.

I'll give it a shot, but I am curious: This machine worked fine for over two years until a few weeks ago. Wouldn't the AV conflict have shown itself a good while ago?

I can't answer your question...but I do know that...often in life...that which was fine yesterday...becomes ruined today or malfunctions.  To use yesterday as a realistic expectation (as opposed to hope) of the present/future...is a perilous approach to life, methinks.

I forgot to suggest that you run the chkdsk /r command after removal...then follow that with the sfc /scannow command.  Then, I would wait a day and post new versions of the data I requested above (MTB and Speccy).

Louis
