I get errors on my Win 10 Home 64 bit, and sometimes the system reboots itself. A persistent error is Event ID 1000 Application error- 4 times today.

Faulting application name: backgroundTaskHost.exe, version: 10.0.14393.0, time stamp: 0x57899bb2

Faulting module name: CSGSuggestLib.dll, version: 0.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x5801a3b3
Exception code: 0xc0000005
Fault offset: 0x0000000000036bc7
Faulting process id: 0x764
Faulting application start time: 0x01d2369ab74f1a03
Faulting application path: C:\WINDOWS\system32\backgroundTaskHost.exe
Faulting module path: C:\Windows\SystemApps\Microsoft.Windows.Cortana_cw5n1h2txyewy\CSGSuggestLib.dll
Report Id: 3bcd46fb-fdad-4c0f-b9a1-b17f423db73c
Faulting package full name: Microsoft.Windows.Cortana_1.7.0.14393_neutral_neutral_cw5n1h2txyewy
Faulting package-relative application ID: CortanaUI

I have disabled Cortana following advice from another forum in case that was a cure, but the error persists.

Repair any damage Windows system files by following my guide at below link. Please let us have the scan and repair result of the SFC command.

I will have a look at Speccy result and if needed include more suggestions for you.

System File Checker (Sfc.exe)

Regarding your link, I am unsure whether I have to run both that in points 2 and 3/4 or have the option. Over some weeks of various problems e.g random reboots sfc /scannow has run several times and found nothing Also with the aid of "a man" a loan PSU was tried, but there was no improvement.

If relevant, the computer was bought early 2010, is an upgrade from Windows 7, and not one certified for Windows 10 by M'soft. Could that in itself be part of the problems, tha might be cured by a younger machine, new or refurb?

If you eliminate the PSU then you can install latest driver for your computer components you can install Windows 7, 8, 8.1 or Windows 10 driver. You can found the device drivers from device or your computer manufacturer website.

Make sure to install all Windows updates.

Execute dism /online /cleanup-image /RestoreHealth  from Command Prompt.

After above command finnish you can reinstall Cortana follow my instruction at below link.

Get-AppxPackage AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register $($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml} has been running for 40 mins+, and nothing has happened, as far as I can see.

Is that right?

@ reebooter Thanks for trying to help me! :)

I must be getting too old, or am too ignorant! I managed to get the updated drivers installed, and I think followed the rest ( or tried to follow, but how successfully????). Problem not solved, and it seems to be a recurring one, given the threads found on Google. I'm wondering whether to live with it, or if new computer is to be advised.

I also ran sfc /scannow, which again found no errors, but several failures were noted. CBS log has been attached, just i case it shows something.

Have you tried Step 2 commands?

If you like you can Repair Install Windows 10 without losing your personal setting, files and install programs.

iI did but am trying it again, but hitting enter after pasting in "-Get-AppxPackage AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register $($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml}" I see "Cannot run a document in the middle of a pipeline: C:\WINDOWS\system32\Get-AppXPackage.

At line:1 char:1
+ Get-AppxPackage AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopme ...
+ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    + CategoryInfo          : InvalidOperation: (C:\WINDOWS\system32\Get-AppXPackage:String) [], RuntimeException
    + FullyQualifiedErrorId : CantActivateDocumentInPipeline"'

Should I not have done that, or is it a fault? Can you give some estimate of time needed too once I'm on right path?

Looks like you have enter the command wrong there is no minus sign before Get-AppxPackage  which you have place one like this -Get-AppxPackage. First execute below command:

Get-Process searchui | Stop-Process Force

Execute following command:

Get-AppXPackage -Name Microsoft.Windows.Cortana | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register  "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}

That was unfortunate for the - to get in, but the original quote direct from copying the command was not clear, so I changed it to plain text.

Here is a shot of the command prompt screen, where you will see the failure still occurs there.

The scannow results will follow.

Is the CBS.log you uploaded created after you have run the Sfc command?

Looking at currently uploaded CBS.log there are no damage Windows system files.

Its time for you to do repair install of Windows 10. You can Repair Install Windows 10 without losing your personal setting, files and install programs.
