Dell Inspiron laptop 4 years old. I assume this may be a hardware issue.

When typing the character generation will just jump to another location or even generate a command. It occurs in all applications, Yahoo mail, Word, Excel, etc. Madning!!!!!

I've had a suggestion that the touch pad may be ultra sensitive but I've devised a cover, I use a mouse, but it still occurs.

If it occurs when you use a mouse...the touchpad driver may be intering with the mouse.

In any case...first thing I would do is uninstall touchpad driver (after disconnecting the mouse)...reboot...see if it still occurs using the touchpad.  If so, I would uninstall the touchpad driver again, uninstall the mouse driver also...then reboot after disabling the touchpad.  I prefer to disable in the BIOS but you can also disable via Device Manager.

Some models have a function key combination to do it after boot.  Those touch pads are trouble.
