Can logging in to web account cause you an infection?

This question is about social media and email accounts. Can simply logging to account (facebook,gmail.so on..) infect your device? Can the account itself get infected - i know about the spam apps, but this is easy to clear. Again, i am talking about simply logging in, not about opening emails or so on :) THanks
