First of all - welcome to BC !

It would be helpful if you could give us a little more information :-  make and model of computer, make and model of printer then more specific suggestions can be made.

In general, printer problems most commonly revolve around printer driver problems. Go to your printer maker's web-site and download the latest Win 8/8.1 drivers for your printer AND a copy of the 'Quick start' guide (probably a PDF file).

Once you have these uninstall every thing to do with your printer. 'Win key+x - select 'Control panel' - select 'Programs and Features' and this will bring up a list of most of your installed software. Select, one at a time, everything in this list that relates to your printer and then, for each item, click 'Uninstall'.

Then open and read the 'Quick start' guide and follow it to re-install your printer. Printers are notoriously fussy about their install sequence.
