On my iMac running 10.6.8, with Safari 5.1.10, a two-sided popup is on the screen when i go into the dashboard in the dock with the backdrop of the usual time, temp, etc. grayed out. It says 'an error occurred while processing your request. Your request was not processed. If error persists contact support.' There's an error code along the bottom which changes each time I open the dashboard. At the top of the error message is a shield icon with an exclamation point inside. On the opposite side of the error message is a screen titled 'Theme: glass'; it has six smaller windows and along the bottom it says 'only play audio in dashboard' and it's checked. When I press the done option the screen reverses to the error message. Any ideas about how to get rid of this PITA?

This started happening after I did a search for how to do a screen capture and went into one of the Yahoo Answers that was listed. When I did, the screen grayed out and it said something about calling an 800 number and I couldn't exit except by force quitting safari.

Would appreciate any help. Thanks, Joe.

I think you have conduit or similar adware installed please check here for entries and remove them: http://www.thesafemac.com/arg-conduit/

I recommend not use cleanmymac any more and remove it. http://macpaw.com/support/cleanmymac/knowledgebase/how-to-uninstall-cleanmymac-3

Please Remove BrowserPlus

1. Click on the Finder Desktop

2. Press the keys CMD + Shift + Go and insert the path below in to the small window.

3. Remove BrowserPlus

~/Library/Internet Plugins-Ins

The next Step I'm not sure that work for you because your system is very old - try it.

1. Open Terminal, copy and paste the complete script below in the Terminal and hit enter.

2. Type you admin Passwort.

3. Next a window appears on your screen. Please select all the entries and paste this log here.

cd ~/Desktop/; p="syslist.txt"; sw_vers >> $p; date | cut -c 1-20 >> $p;echo "==kextstat==" >> $p;kextstat -kl >> $p; echo "==User launchctl==" >> $p;launchctl list >> $p;echo "==Root lauchctl==" >> $p;sudo launchctl list >> $p;echo "==packages==" >> $p;sudo pkgutil --pkgs >> $p;echo "==extensions==" >> $p;ls -1A /e*/mach* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts 2> /dev/null >> $p;echo "==Login items==" >> $p;osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get the name of every login item' >> $p;echo "==hostfile==" >> $p; cat /etc/hosts >> $p;open -e $p

In Addition post a new EtreCheck log.

Could just be a widget that you installed in the past that is no longer supported or updated and is now "freaking out", so to speak...or something similar. Have you tried removing some or all of your widgets? Here is a page that tells you how to remove a widget in 10.6.x:

http://www.quepublishing.com/articles/article.aspx?p=1399907&seqNum=23

This started happening after I did a search for how to do a screen capture and went into one of the Yahoo Answers that was listed. When I did, the screen grayed out and it said something about calling an 800 number and I couldn't exit except by force quitting safari.

Would appreciate any help. Thanks, Joe.

After force quitting Safari, have you had any problems with Safari?

It is also possible that you had a web clip on Dashboard, which is essentially using Safari. If you got hit with a javascript "fake" virus or computer support alert window (which sounds to be the case), then I guess it might be possible for web clips on Dashboard to get messed up. If that is the case, then it could be a simple matter of removing that web clip.

Dante:

Conduit and other adware listed on 'thesafemac' are not there. Also I could not find 'cleanmymac'.

I deleted browser plus.

The terminal script didn't work.

Hi Max:

There aren't any new widgets there that I don't recognize.

Haven't had any probs with Safari after force quitting it, just with the dashboard where the error msg is. I think you might be onto something though because a couple of times the error said "clip loading" then the message appears. How would I go about finding this web clip and deleting it?

When I clicked on applications then dashboard, this is what came up:

file://localhost/Applications/Dashboard.app/Contents/
file://localhost/Applications/Dashboard.app/Contents/_CodeSignature/
file://localhost/Applications/Dashboard.app/Contents/_CodeSignature/CodeResources
file://localhost/Applications/Dashboard.app/Contents/CodeResources

file://localhost/Applications/Dashboard.app/Contents/Resources/
file://localhost/Applications/Dashboard.app/Contents/Resources/Dashboard.icns

Update:

I KNEW I recognized this stupid error message from somewhere & i found it. On my bank's website I logged on with cookies disabled and that error message appeared. I exited, enabled cookies, then logged on again with no probs. So it's the bank's website where this came from. I sent a request for help to their support dept. but they're not open until monday, and even then I'm not sure they'll know what to do but maybe they will. Meanwhile if either of you know how I can get this clip deleted let me know. Weirdest thing isn't it?

Thanks fellas.

A webclip on the Dashboard should remove just like a widget does. See if this thread helps:

http://forums.macrumors.com/threads/how-do-you-remove-clips-from-your-dashboard.758752/

Supposedly (I don't current have a Mac running macOS 10.6.x to confirm and things a bit different in newer versions) if you click the "+" button on the Dashboard and then click "Manage Widgets...", then a close button (a little circle with an "x" in it) should appear at the upper left corner of the webclip. Clicking on it should make the webclip go away. Supposedly according to that thread, holding the option key down when in Dashboard should also make the close button appear, but I cannot test that as I don't have a Mac running 10.6.x (and 10.10.x does not support that).

CleanMyMac ist still starting if you have manually remove the Application the startup items still there. BrowserPlus is an deprecated enhancement of the yahoo tool bar. Can you remember have you install it in the past?

The terminal script didn't work

Because you system is too old - sorry we can do it line by line. You need to copy the line and insert to your terminal. For some lines you need your password. If you got an error from one of the lines no problem, execute the next line. There is no output because the content will write in file syslist.txt on your desktop.

cd ~/Desktop
touch syslist.txt
ls -al /Applications/ >> syslist.txt
ls -al /Library/PreferencePanes/ >> syslist.txt
ls -al /Library/Widgets/ >> syslist.txt
kextstat -kl >> syslist.txt
launchctl list >> syslist.txt
sudo launchctl list >> syslist.txt
sudo pkgutil --pkgs >> syslist.txt
ls -1A /e*/mach* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts 2> /dev/null >> syslist.txt
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get the name of every login item' >> syslist.txt
cat /etc/hosts >> syslist.txt
open -e syslist.txt

If the window with the log not appears the log is on your Desktop named syslist.txt. Open it copy and paste the content here.
