Computer running windows 7 has issues with .exe (and .zip) files.  Trying to download or run an .exe file - sends to "open with" dialogue prompt.  In the 'associate file type with program' - .exe is not listed.

The computer seems to be free of viruses although there was a Trojan recently found by Malwarebytes.  Running Kaspersky Internet Security.

Tried to go to default associations in registry, but did not solve the issue - perhaps because the .exe is not recognized?

Please assist!

Thank you

Would almost have to be some type of malware. You tried this?

yes, I had done this several days ago; however, I just tried to fun through the steps again to verify that the changes had stayed and the "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile"  is not in the registry list!
