Using Windows 7 SP1 HP 64bit operating system with latest patches installed (Oct. 2016). Firefox browser is up to date (AFAIK) with version listed as 49.01.

In the last couple of weeks I have had two redirects to security warning webpages after Google searches. Both had telephone numbers, one had a constant audio tone and the other an English language warning about security issues and prompt to call number. Closed browser both times using Task Manager.

I cleared Firefox browser (and all other browsers) cache, history, cookies, temp internet files, session, etc. using CCleaner and also the browser's built in cleaning options. I've run a Malwarebytes (Free) basic scan (updated to latest database) with nothing found. I ran Bitdefender IS 2016 quick scan and did not show anything found.

I do not have any "free" utilities other than MWB and CCleaner. I update these through their websites and carefully check the installers for any unwanted "partner" or "free offers".  I always update software such as Adobe Acrobat reader, Adobe Flash player, Java, etc. regularly and always through the application's website, not from any on screen update notice. I always close onscreen update notices using Task Manager not using any Close option, including red X button on the notice.

As stated this has happened twice in the last two weeks and I use Firefox heavily on a daily basis, including Google Search. I also use Chrome browser (up to date) occasionally but have not had this happen in Chrome. I have Internet Explorer 11 (up to date) installed but very rarely use it. When I have used it I have not had this happen.

I would appreciate any feedback or help on this issue. It is not a regular occurrence but it is obviously of some concern.

Edit: This only occurs in the browser window. No desktop or onscreen popups.

p22002970.gif Please download Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) to your desktop.
There are 2 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.

rKill.exe: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/10/
iExplore.exe (renamed rKill.exe): http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/11/

  • Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
  • If using Windows Vista, 7 or 8 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.
  • A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
  • If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
  • Do not reboot until instructed.
  • If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.

If normal mode still doesn't work, run the tool from safe mode.

When the scan is done Notepad will open with rKill log.
Post it in your next reply.

NOTE. rKill.txt log will also be present on your desktop.

NOTE Do NOT wrap your logs in "quote" or "code" brackets.
Do NOT use spoilers.
Do NOT edit your reply to post additional logs. Create new reply. I'll not get any email notifications about edits so I won't know you posted something new.

Thanks for the quick reply!

Followed your instructions and logs are posted below. Where instructed I saved the tool to my Desktop. If the instruction did NOT state save to Desktop I saved it to a secondary hard drive where my Downloads folder is located. I have a SSD as my primary and system drive and try and limit writes to it as much as possible. Probably overkill in this case but I hope that running Farbar Service Scanner and MiniToolBox tools from a secondary HDD is not an issue. Both tools ran successfully as far as I can tell.

All tools run in the order your posted and no restarts required.

Sorry about the delayed reply, I was away from my system over the weekend.

A couple of questions before we proceed. I read some of the comments for both TFC and AdwCleaner and it appears there are some instances of problems created when using these tools.

  1. For TFC some comments stated that necessary files had been removed and the result was non-functioning software. Does TFC clean just files with the .tmp extension or does it remove all folders in the various Temp directories?
  2. Does AdwCleaner scan for known adware only? I've read that you have to read all the results carefully so that it doesn't clean or remove programs that are safe.
  3. Would it be advisable to create a Restore Point prior to running these tools and would that allow me to undo any unwanted changes to my system?

Could you please make some recommendations on how to safely use these two tools?

Thanks again for your help and I just want to make sure that I use these tools properly and don't make unnecessary changes to my system.

Creating new restore point never hurts.

As for 1 and 2, normally both programs are very safe to use.

Thanks for the clarification. I'll run the tools ASAP and post the results, probably tomorrow AM.

OK, I ran TFC and AdwCleaner. A couple of questions/observations before we proceed.

  1. Ran TFC. It found about 60 MB of data, Did not see any option to save the log that appeared in the TFC window upon completion. I restarted the computer even though TFC did not request that I do so. A note you might want to include in your instructions on running TFC: It automatically resets Explorer/Tools/Folder Options/View to the default settings. I had to change them back to the way I wanted them.

  2. Ran AdwCleaner. It found 8 issues. I did not use the Clean option.. Instead I created the log file below. My comments are in red. I will re-run AdwCleaner and clean the items once my comments are addressed.

    Folder Found:  C:\Users\Rick\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Extensions

No issue cleaning this folder as far as I can tell. Not sure what the Chrome extension is that it refers to.

    File Found:  C:\Users\Rick\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Local Storage

Same as above. Don't think this is an issue to Clean. Your thoughts?

    Shortcut infected:  C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Acronis\True

    Image\Tools and Utilities\Mount Image.lnk ( /mount_image )
Acronis True Image is a legitimate program and I use it regularly. Not sure I want to clean/delete this item. Your comment?

    ***** [ Scheduled Tasks ] *****

    No malicious task found.

    ***** [ Registry ] *****

    Key Found:  HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\AppID\BHO.DLL
I ran regedit and the Registry Editor did not list this folder even after running a Find search. The five folder names that were listed
all started with HKEY_. Do you think it's OK to Clean this item? A little leery as it is modifying the registry.

    ***** [ Web browsers ] *****

No malicious Firefox based browser items found.

    - aol.com
    Chrome pref Found:  [C:\Users\Rick\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Secure

    Preferences ] - nonjdcjchghhkdoolnlbekcfllmednbl
The first three Chrome prefs Found, search.yahoo.com, ask.com and aol.com should not be an issue to clean/delete.
Not sure about the last one listed under Secure Preferences. OK to clean?

After we resolve the AdwCleaner questions I will run the Junkware Removal Tool and the Sophos Free Virus Removal tool and post the results.

Last question for now: It appears that AdwCleaner installs itself in the C: root directory when run. How do I remove it after after we have finished everything? It is not listed in Control Panel>Programs and Features>Uninstall window.

Thanks again for your patience!

We'll remove all tools we used in our final step.

I can't comment on every single item found by our tools.

If I had to I'd have to work here full time.

I'm just a volunteer.

Normally it's OK to clean everything found by AdwCleaner. It won't break anything.

Your call.

Understand about  commenting. I just thought you might have some insight into what AdwCleaner identifies. I''ll decide on AdwCleaner findings to Clean.

I'll run the other two tools tomorrow and post the results. No other incidents of redirecting in Firefox since my original post.

and save them. I have scanned this link file with both Bitdefender IS 2016 and Malwarebytes with no threat shown.

Your computer is clean p3879546.jpg

1. This step will remove all cleaning tools we used, it'll reset restore points (so you won't get reinfected by accidentally using some older restore point) and it'll make some other minor adjustments...
This is a very crucial step so make sure you don't skip it.
Download 51a5ce45263de-delfix.pngDelFix by Xplode to your desktop. Delfix will delete all the used tools and logfiles.

Double-click Delfix.exe to start the tool.
Make sure the following items are checked:

  • Activate UAC (optional; some users prefer to keep it off)
  • Remove disinfection tools
  • Create registry backup
  • Purge System Restore
  • Reset system settings

Now click "Run" and wait patiently.
Once finished a logfile will be created. You don't have to attach it to your next reply.

2. Make sure Windows Updates are current.

3. If any trojans, rootkits or bootkits were listed among your infection(s), make sure, you change all of your on-line important passwords (bank account(s), secured web sites, etc.) immediately!

4. Check if your browser plugins are up to date.
Firefox - https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/plugincheck/
other browsers: https://browsercheck.qualys.com/ (click on "Scan without installing plugin" and then on "Scan now")

5. Download, and install WOT (Web OF Trust): http://www.mywot.com/. It'll warn you (in most cases) about dangerous web sites.

6. Run Malwarebytes "Quick scan" once in a while to assure safety of your computer.

7. Run Temporary File Cleaner (TFC), AdwCleaner and Junkware Removal Tool (JRT) weekly (you need to redownload these tools since they were removed by DelFix).

8. Download and install Secunia Personal Software Inspector (PSI): http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/. The Secunia PSI is a FREE security tool designed to detect vulnerable and out-dated programs and plug-ins which expose your PC to attacks. Run it weekly.

9. (optional) If you want to keep all your programs up to date, download and install FileHippo Update Checker.
The Update Checker will scan your computer for installed software, check the versions and then send this information to FileHippo.com to see if there are any newer releases.

10. When installing\updating ANY program, make sure you always select "Custom " installation, so you can UN-check any possible "drive-by-install" (foistware), like toolbars etc., which may try to install along with the legitimate program. Do NOT click "Next" button without looking at any given page.

Thanks for the report on a clean bill of health! As regards the rest of your post I have some comments and hopefully they will not conflict with your instructions. I'm posting your list of the 12 steps you laid out and my comments to them in red.

1. This step will remove all cleaning tools we used, it'll reset restore points (so you won't get reinfected by accidentally using some older restore point) and it'll make some other minor adjustments...
This is a very crucial step so make sure you don't skip it.
Download DelFix by Xplode to your desktop. Delfix will delete all the used tools and logfiles.

Double-click Delfix.exe to start the tool.
Make sure the following items are checked:

Activate UAC (optional; some users prefer to keep it off)
I will check this. I had UAC enabled prior to this.
    Remove disinfection tools
I will check this. I want to make sure all the tools I downloaded to my desktop are removed.
I assume this will include AdwCleaner (which was installed into my C:/root directory) and also Sophos Virus Removal Tool which was
installed into my C:/Program Files (x86) directory.

    Create registry backup
I will NOT be checking this. I will create my own registry backup, as I regularly do, to my secondary HDD.
I do not want to have the Delfix tool write a 358 MB registry backup to my SSD C drive as I have limited space on it.
This also saves writing a large file to the SSD which I'm sure you know decreases longevity of the drive over the long haul. Any problem with this?

    Purge System Restore
I wiil NOT be checking this. I will use CCleaner to delete previous Restore Points but will save the last one which was automatically
created by Sophos prior to it's installation of SRT which was AFTER Junkware Removal Tool had run and cleaned out files.
Since the Sophos Virus Removal Tool found absolutely no infections of any kind after completing it's scan, I'm  assuming the Restore Point it
created should be clean. There will be another Restore Point automatically created by Task Scheduler in 7 days from now, which should also
    be clean.

    Reset system settings
Since I have no idea what system settings would be reset I will NOT be checking it. If you have any information concerning
what system settings are effected by DelFix I would appreciate your letting me know and I would reconsider whether to check this or not.

Now click "Run" and wait patiently.
Once finished a logfile will be created. You don't have to attach it to your next reply.
Will Delfix auto delete itself after it is run or do I have to uninstall it manually?

2. Make sure Windows Updates are current.
They are as of Oct 2016 patch Tuesday.

3. If any trojans, rootkits or bootkits were listed among your infection(s), make sure, you change all of your on-line important passwords (bank account(s), secured web sites, etc.) immediately!
None were found by either Sophos Virus Removal Tool full scan,  Bitdefender IS 2016 full scan or Malwarebytes full scan.

4. Check if your browser plugins are up to date.
Firefox - https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/plugincheck/ I do this weekly already.
other browsers: https://browsercheck.qualys.com/ (click on "Scan without installing plugin" and then on "Scan now")
I will check this out. The only other browser I use is Chrome.

5. Download, and install WOT (Web OF Trust): http://www.mywot.com/. It'll warn you (in most cases) about dangerous web sites.
    Already installed on Firefox.

6. Run Malwarebytes "Quick scan" once in a while to assure safety of your computer.
I do this at least once or twice a week.

7. Run Temporary File Cleaner (TFC), AdwCleaner and Junkware Removal Tool (JRT) weekly (you need to redownload these tools since they were removed by DelFix).
Can these be downloaded and run from another location other than my Desktop? I would prefer to have them on my secondary HDD.
Again, to minimize writes to my SSD. Probably not for AdwCleaner as it installs into the C:/root directory when run, correct?

    I will check into this.

9. (optional) If you want to keep all your programs up to date, download and install FileHippo Update Checker.
The Update Checker will scan your computer for installed software, check the versions and then send this information to FileHippo.com to see if there are any newer releases.
I will check into this also.

10. When installing\updating ANY program, make sure you always select "Custom " installation, so you can UN-check any possible "drive-by-install" (foistware), like toolbars etc., which may try to install along with the legitimate program. Do NOT click "Next" button without looking at any given page.
I always do this when installing or updating any programs.

11. Read:

12. Please, let me know, how your computer is doing. Will do.

I apologize for having so many questions about this. I'm not trying to be a PITA but we've made quite a few changes to my system and I want to avoid any unnecessary
ones. Hope you understand.

I want to thank you again for your time and patience in dealing with this.

You're very welcome [IMG]http://i1.ifrm.com/228/109/upload/p22002759.gif[/IMG

Reset system settings does only one thing:

The tool displays (if enabled) file extensions known.
