AVG recently prompted me to clean my registry. I did this not knowing it was not part of the free AVG. After the program finished running it prompted me for a purchase. I declined. Since then I have noticed a considerable slow-down in my boot times. Thoughts?

Uninstall...the registry cleaner.

Then...do as the following directs.

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
List last 10 Event Viewer log
  List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size.

Click Go and paste the content into your next post.

Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy taking care to post the link of the snapshot in your next post.

Go to Piriform's website, and download the free version on the left.  Click Download from Piriform.com (the FileHippo link requires an extra click). Or if you want to use a portable version of Speccy (which doesn't require installation), click the builds page link and download the portable version. You will now be asked where you want to save the file. The best place to put it is the Desktop, as it will be easy to find later.

After the file finishes downloading, you are ready to run Speccy. If you downloaded the installer, simply double-click on it and follow the prompts until installation is complete. If you downloaded the portable version, you will need to unzip it before use. Right-click the ZIP file and click Extract all. Click Next. Open up the extracted folder and double-click on Speccy.

Once inside Speccy, it will look similar to this (with your computer's specifications, of course): p22004369.gif

Now, at the top, click File > Publish Snapshot. You will see the following prompt:

p22004371.gif

Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard

p22004372.gif

Now, once you are back in the forum topic you are posting in, click the p22004370.gif button. Right-click in the empty space of the Reply box and click Paste. Then, click Add Reply below the Reply box.

Java installed is outdated, increasing vulnerability to malware.

IE 9 installed...is outdated, increasing system vulnerability to malware.

Card reader service (risdxc) is malperforming.

Insufficient free space (less than 15%) on Windows partition.

3-year period when critical updates were not installed (May 2013-May 2016).

No optical drive detected.

First thing I suggest...is updating IE to current version and then downloading/installing all critical updates.

I would also uninstall all AVG applications...and use Microsoft Security Elements as my AV...you seem to be getting the updates.

I would uninstal the outdated Java versions...and either totally uninstall Java or properly update with current versions.  See Why should I remove older versions of Java from my system - http://www.java.com/en/download/faq/remove_olderversions.xml .

I would then run the chkdsk /r command on my Windows partition, see Chkdsk From Command Prompt, Win 7 - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/496613/contextmenu-is-causing-explorerexe-to-crash/?p=3067880 .

AVG recently prompted me to clean my registry. I did this not knowing it was not part of the free AVG. After the program finished running it prompted me for a purchase. I declined. Since then I have noticed a considerable slow-down in my boot times. Thoughts?

Open the Advanced Boot Options (this is where the Safe Mode options are located) and select Last Known Good Configuration.  This will boot from the last image created with the last good boot.  This can resolve issues with the registry.

Registry cleaners and optimization software are not recommend by Bleeping Computer.

Why you should not use Registry Cleaners and Optimization Tools

There are numerous programs which purport to improve system performance, make repairs and tune up a computer. Many of them include such features as a registry cleaner, registry optimizer, disk optimizer, etc. Some of these programs even incorporate optimization and registry cleaning features alongside anti-malware capabilities. These registry cleaners and optimizers claim to speed up your computer by finding and removing orphaned and corrupt registry entries that are responsible for slowing down system performance. There is no statistical evidence to back such claims. Advertisements to do so are borderline scams intended to goad users into using an unnecessary and potential dangerous product.

Credit for this goes to Quietman7, one of our Global Moderators.

Family and loved ones will always be a priority in my daily life.  You never know when one will leave you.

Thank you very much for your reply, Luis. I will do as you have suggested when I have time with that machine.

I almost never use Explorer, but will update regardless.

What can be done about the card reader service and why is this important?

I am aware of the low space and am in the process of cleaning up my HD.

This Ultrabook has no optical drive.

I have had very bad experiences with Windows AV in the past. Defender or Fortress, I think. How is Elements different?

The downtime on this box when the critical updates were not installed was almost entirely because these Windows AV programs made this machine almost completely unusable.

I will also do as you suggest regarding my registry.

As an aside, could you please take a look at another of my threads entitled adb.exe. It has been up for over 24 hours and has not been commented upon by a Moderator.

Thanks again.

Ok.Not good. Windows threw a bleepfit about updating. It says the SP1 is already installed, but it does not show in Computer > Properties it also asked for a half-dozen prereqs which installed, but took up several gigs of space. IE 11 still won't install. I'm ready to reformat and install Ubuntu. Please advise.

FWIW:  In the Windows and O/S forums...topics are posted for all members.  That is to say...Staff personnel are not expected to attend to every post...in fact, they are not expected to attend to ANY post.

The reasoning behind this is simple...the definition of a forum implies that open discussion...implies contributions from any member.  Knowledge and experience reside within all members...and any member may be able to assist any OP posting a topic.

The nature of the Moderator position (in the forums previously specified) is to be a facilitator, an administrative aide to the website.

This does not mean that Mods cannot be of some direct use within a given topic...but it does mean that to expect assistance by a Mod on every topic...is erroneous and such perception does a great disservice to all those contributing members who do not carry the Mod designation.  Mods do not possess all the knowledge and/or experience available via the forum membership...that is an impossibility...and the forum experience is intended to provide the OP the greatest possible chance of having her/his topic properly addressed...by those who may provide assistance.

Aside from the malware areas of the website...this approach is the one which best describes how the forums/subforums operate.

Louis
