I am running Windows 10 on an Asus X553M laptop. Problems first occurred maybe ten days ago. What happens now is that the icons on the notification area have disappeared or the operating system ones sit there but clicking on them doesn't do anything. The only way to start or stop the computer is to use the power button. I hope that I have posted this problem in the right place and that someone can help me...please!

I think you're talking about taskbar icons? Is that so? If not, then maybe you can explain a bit more and maybe one picture.
There may be very different reasons, why they don't work. So, as more exactly You can tell what version, what cleaners, etc You uses, then better it is.

Yes, I did mean task bar. Rather embarrassingly my computer started behaving flawlessly almost as soon as I posted my query here. But thanks for the information, usamsa. I'll give it a good read in case my computer acts up again. Thanks to the two of you.

Glad to hear that it's working for you.

Make a System Restore point now - that way you'll have it to go back to.

Good luck!
