I am absolutely sure I have seen this topic, posted by someone(s) here before. However could not find it.

After I downloaded my current latest nvidia geforce GT-740 driver, through the geforce experience program for the first time, my PC rebooted and a very different screen showed up. It was like a safe mode screen. Another reboot brought the same screen again.

This was the first time I used the experience program which reboots automatically (which I did not know). In all past instances I entered the nvidia site, downloaded new divers and if I recall correctly it gives you the option to reboot now or later. I mistakenly thought the experience program would be the same.

I tried to stop it closing the experience program from the Task Manager. Useless. The countdown continued regardless of having ended the task in the Task Manager, but with a black screen.

I would have chosen later because at the time I was ripping one of my original CDs.

Changing screen resolution did not help. I just got another weird looking screen.

I ran sfc /scannow which returned it found but could not repair some problems.

I ran chkdsk /f and, sure enough, there must have been close to 100 problems.

Then I ran chkdsk /f /r but that didn´t change the situation. SFC continued with the same message. I checked winsxs for pendingrenames and pendingdeletes  Pendingrenames was OK and pendingdeletes also. Inflight was empty. My PC is set to show hidden files and folders and also protected system files.

I had a look at your Speccy report and these lines caught my eye -

Antivirus

Bitdefender Antivirus Antivirus: Enabled
Virus Signature Database: Up to date

Advanced SystemCare Ultimate Antivirus: Enabled
Virus Signature Database: Up to date

This says you have two A/V products installed and active on your computer which is never a good idea as they can cause conflicts and slowdowns. I suggest you uninstall one of them - my preference would be to keep Bitdefender but that choice is yours - re-boot and see if there is any improvement. Since A/V products install themselves deep in the OS you will probably have to go to the web-site of the one you decide to uninstall to download their uninstall tool.

Try this as a first step and post back if you still have problems.

You are absolutely right. I didn't want to lose the ASC since it does lots of things (although I have registry clean disabled).

Bitdefender, I believe is the better if not the best, so that one stays. What I did was to completely disable the antivirus in ASC.  What happened is that I upgraded from ASC 8, which does not have an antivirus, to ASC 9, which has. For malware I run Malwarebytes every day, in addition to its scheduled scans.

But I never noticed, since upgrades normally change a few things here and there and removes some bugs. But lets the program stay basically the same as the prior version. During the weeks I used both (ASC and Bitdefender) I had no problems. I regularly run chkdsks and sfc's. The OS which is on a SSD gets trimmed every day.

I chekdisked /f and /r tens of times. I shut off the power supply and pressed once the start button to eliminate static electricity.

Unfortunately it didn't work.

The problem occured when nvidia rebooted while I was ripping a CD. After that, chaos ensued.

Since I could not fix it, I installed a backup I had done about one week before. I have quite a few backups of different things. A wise thing to have. They are on external drives which add up to 5 TB, and normally are not connected to the mainframe.

The situation worked perfectly with all working fine. But when I ran a sfc I got the error statement. That hasn't bothered me at all in my work since all programs work seamlessly.

I have 80 programs. However, boot time is less than 30 seconds. SSDs are extraordinary. And with the 16 GB RAM I can work with many open windows at the same time. I'm no gamer, but the nvidia MSI GT-740 (with 2 GB) allows me to watch BluRay perfectly on a wide screen.

Nothing of this has changed. But when a sfc keeps telling you that you have corrupted system files you begin to wonder if there's something wrong with Microsoft's sfc program that is installed. Maybe the crash somehow damaged it.

However, I posted the CBS log file which describes all the things the sfc has done and what it has found. It's a much longer log than a combofix log and I don't have the knowledge to analyze it correctly. There are instances it reports problems, but I don't know what to do about them.

I would appreciate if you, or someone else, checks the log and tries to determine if the errors it shows should in some way affect the performance of something I have not used.

Internet is no problem since it continues to download at 40 Mbits checked by speedtest.net (of Ookla I believe).

If the CBS log shows that something shouldn't work but it actually does, then my sfc /scannow went bonkers.

I would really appreciate knowing that.

I mean, I won't have to reinstall Windows or perform a repair because everything is working absolutely well. If this is the case we may ask Microsoft how to fix the sfc program, which must have an insane number of lines.

The Windows program by itself, it is my belief, must have over 100,000 lines.

Please help me if you can. Thank you.

Hi passacaglia :)

Chris asked me to take a look at your corrupt system files issue. Since you said that SFC is returning a message saying that it found corrupt files but couldn't repair them, we'll start with running a SFC scan (again), and grab a fresh CBS.log.

EndqYRa.pngSystem File Checker (SFC)
Follow the instructions below to run a SFC scan on your system and to provide the CBS log in your next reply;
  • On Windows Vista & 7, click on the Windows Start Menu, then enter cmd in the search box, right-click on the cmd icon and select Spcusrh.pngRun as Administrator
  • On Windows 8, drag your cursor in the bottom-left corner, and right-click on the metro menu preview, then select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • On Windows 8.1 and Windows 10, right click on the Windows logo in the bottom-left corner and select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • Enter the command below and press on Enter;
    sfc /scannow
    Note: There's a space between "sfc" and "/scannow";
  • Once the scan is complete, enter the command below and press on Enter
    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"
  • A file called cbs.txt will have appeared on your Desktop. Upload the file on Dropbox, Google Drive or OneDrive and post the download URL for it here;
Note: Please note that the CBS.log is volatile, which means that if you don't upload it after the SFC scan is completed, it won't have the information from the scan anymore. So archive it and upload it as soon as you can.

Aura

You're not going to believe this

Before following your instructions I fixed it by myself

Sorry for not replying sooner but I fixed it just 10 min ago

We had a whole day party yesterday saying goodbye to a lady friend who was returning to the US (Las Vegas)

So yesterday was lost (for work). And this morning's hangover also impeded any sane ideas on how to fix this.

FYI some interesting things happened while I was toying with the PC.

Chrome stopped working and always showed that "Aw shuck" screen.

Via Mozilla I downloaded it again. However, the PC didn't boot anymore.

During one of those black screens I got a window saying the BIOS was corrupt, it couldn't work, and it would download its backup copy (which took about 10 minutes). And then reboot.

But instead of Windows I got a message on the black screen saying something was wrong and press Ctrl+Alt+Del to reboot. Which of course only brought me back to the black screen with the same message.

Before this, while the PC was partially sane, my CD/DVD drive disappeared  from the explorer.

I didn't bother to look it up in the Computer Management / Disk Management because I took it for granted that there, the CD drive would show up.

However, it didn't work.

Via the Aomei Bootable Backup CD I restored the whole C drive to Oct 2. But that had the same problem. It wouldn't boot.

I ran the Easy Recovery CD but that could't solve the problem.

Then I ran the Boot Genius CD and that was helpful. It found 5 files in the boot sector, missing or corrupt.

It recovered them and now I could boot. But the SFC continued with the same message.

While Windows was alive I recovered a system backup. That helped because it put the OS where it was supposed to be. You see, the OS was not in the C partition, which is a SSD. It was in the H partition which is in my internal HDD and is GPT. Not MBR.

While Windows was alive, I ran chkdsk /f /r every time I could, and afterwards checked the SFC.

I don't mess with the registry but this was a very special situation. So I ran the Registry Cleaner that the ASC has.

It said I had about 50 registry problems and asked if I wanted to fix that. And I did. I believed that nothing more serious than what I was going through would happen by messing with 50 registry items.

I don't recall what other things I did but after the last chkdsk /f /r, I ran the SFC and it said "it did not find any integrity violations. That was a very nice surprise. I hope I saved you some work and some time going through another CBS log. I am never 100% sure of things (except death), so I don't know what will happen tomorrow after I turn it on. But I believe there is more than a 50/50 chance that it will work.

I have to rip some tracks from about 40 CDs tomorrow for a guy's flashdrive.

Since the problem started with a shutdown while I was ripping, I'll download that nvidia driver again (since I'm back in time and therefore don't have the latest driver). But I'll do it while I'm not working with anything else. i.e. shut down all other programs I may be using before downloading.

It is strange, since nothing ever happened when I was working with two or three programs at the same time.

Well, thanks a lot Aura, and now I know who's the expert I can call for thorny problems.

Good night and good luck,

pasacaglia

And, by the way, now I remember another message I got on a black screen.

I don't remember the exact words but it was something like this:

"Your OS disk is no longer working. Please replace it with another disk and then reboot again"

If I were to put a new disk, naturally all OS information would have been lost and I would have had to reinstall Windows all over again, as well as download the 80 programs I have, since their basics are on Program Data, Program Files, and Program Files(x86) folders on partition C:. On top of this, part of the programs are placed in C:\Users\Ernesto\App Data\ Roaming or Local.

So I transferred the operating system from drive C: (the SSD) to partition H: which is in a normal fixed drive. I thought it might not work because the C: SSD partition is a normal MBR. But, due to the size of the second disk, it does not work in MBR and had to be changed to GPT.

When I ran a system backup, the backup put the OS back in C:, where it belonged.

But all went well. I had replaced the OS disk. From now on it had to boot from Partition H:

Getting the CBS log to fnd out what happened is not just a one-click operation.

The CBS log is a system file and is owned either by System or by Trusted Installer.

So in order to be able to work with it you have to take the current owner away from the file and transfer ownership to yourself. This is done with 2 commands in the elevated command prompt: takeown /f and icacls.

I am mentioning all this, which I believe I hadn´t done so before, in order so that it might help other members of this forum when confronted with similar problems.

I

It actually is :) If you enter the command I listed in my previous directives, you'll end up with a copy of CBS.log, named cbs.txt on your desktop. No need to take ownership or change permissions.

Thanks for the tip

But you must realize I had already obtained the log BEFORE I received your reply to my posts, which included the log

From now on, if I have a similar problem with sfc, I'll follow your instructions

Thank you very much.

All good, no problem :)

Edit: Also, the copy/pasted CBS.log you posted didn't contain any useful information for me, hence why I asked for a full log in my first post. It's always better to provide the full log rather than copy/paste it because most of the log will be cut by the forum software since it's too long/big.
