I have an ancient laptop and in the last couple of months it's had a problem that's becoming increasingly irksome.

When I start it from cold it boots into Windows and tells me "Restart your computer to install important updates".

This dialog does not have the option to postpone this.

So it restarts and then, lo and behold, when it boots back into Windows it presents the same dialog again.  This time, however, it allows me to postpone the restart which I do (for the maximum of 4 hours).

I've tried the following:

Delete SoftwareDistribution where all downloaded updates are cached

Run the Fixit tool 50202.

Neither has worked.

Looking at the Update history, there are quite a number of pending and failed updates, but it's not possible as far as I can see to identify exactly which update is causing this issue.

Any help gratefully received.  Happy to supply more information if required.  It's particularly irritating that the first time it boots up the option to postpone the restart is not enabled.
