Computer Type: Compaq Presario 6000 6430NX
years old: 4 or 5 (i lost count)
the problem: loud HUMMMing sound coming from PSU fan

this first happend last year...i uses to fix this problem by cleaning the dust off the fan with a paintbrush

but now cleaning it is not working...it just keeps making a loud huumm sound like a freezer

things i have tryed...
1. tryed to get a new PSU but Compaq used a custom PSU and motherboard in this computer

2. opened the PSU up and used the vacum to clean out all the dust

3. tryed useing the computer with the PSU out of the tower

NOTE: when i turn the computer on in the morning the fan is runing fine but the sound starts and gets louder as the PSU gets warmer

Sounds like it's time to replace the power supply. Wouldn't let it go for too much longer or it could overheat and possibly start a fire.

its not overheating so its not a fire hazard yet...but it will be if the fan stops working!

and i cant replace the power supply with a off the shelf PSU due to custom parts made by Compaq...
if i use a off the shelf PSU i end up with a 12V line going into a 3V socket on the motherboard and so on...

i have been trying to find a adapter for this but i can only find adapters for dell computers...

You might be able to replace the fan.

ya i was thinking of doing that...it looks like a normal tower fan...one wire is black and one is red...

so am right in thinking that its...
red wire= +
and
black wire= -

EDIT: i found out that my PSU is a Bestec Model number ATX-1956D
