So Rainmeter is a free open source software that is available in the Bleeping Computer downloads section. It is a system monitoring GUI software, and also it is aesthetically pleasing. There are a number of free custom skins on Deviantart that are free plugins to customize Rainmeter. However, common sense tells you that you shouldn't download random stuff from the internet. There is an article here that says that some Raimeter skins and plugins on Devintart may have viruses or malware.

It would be good to know if a particular Rainmeter skin is safe before downloading it. How do you know? What are your guys' thoughts on this?

Yeah, it is completely safe to download and use Rainmeter skins. However, your PC configuration must be good enough to load the Rainmeter app. There are many cool skins, see this latest list of  2017: https://techiespad.com/rainmeter-skins/

It completely depends on your system configuration. They are completely safe as they are available on trusted websites to download after complete verification only. However, if your system's configuration is low then you might face issue in running them. At that time it's the issue of your system not in the skin.

Perhaps this article might help you out if you're looking to download them. But do try at your own risk only.
