This morning my wife's Windows 10 laptop started using huge amounts of bandwidth. It looked like "host process for setting synchronization" was using the data. I ran malwarebytes and it cam up clean but the AVG popped up a warning for chrome_update.bat She picked "protect me", rebooted and no warnings come up but after 15 minutes the data usage goes through the roof again.

I have it set for a metered connection, but something is using gigs of bandwidth

What version and build are you running? Microsoft is rolling out the Anniversary Update which is about 3 to 4GB.

The Anniversary version is 1607.

Other than that I would wait for a member who can suggest what programs to run.

I have it set for metered connection so it shouldn't be updating.

I had this problem July 2016. Turned out to be some sort of virus. Suggest you post in virus section. I was using 1.5 gb per hour and had nothing running. Bleepingcomputers fixed everything,
