Hello,

I would be so grateful if anyone could help me with a problem with my laptop.  Everything was working fine until I booted up yesterday morning and it took absolutely ages - at least 10 minutes.  On finally booting up, the desktop icons had turned huge and the laptop was generally very slow.

I ran chkdsk and since then the laptop now boots up and the icons are correctly sized, but I get a message in the system tray saying 'unable to to connect to windows service' and it still takes ages to boot up.  The design of windows has also changed to a basic version.

In addition to running chkdsk I have performed scans with superantispyware and malware bytes, no issues, just tracking cookies which I deleted.

Could anyone please help?  I use my laptop for work (I am self employed) so could do with sorting this out asap.  I don't have a huge amount of files, so while I'd prefer not to do a complete re-install, this is an option if needs be.

My laptop is a sony vaio running windows 7 64 bit, 4 GB, Intel core i3 CPU.  My knowledge is fairly basic so if any further info is required please let me know and I will provide it.

Thanks an advance for any help :)

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
List last 10 Event Viewer log
  List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size.

Click Go and paste the content into your next post.

Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy taking care to post the link of the snapshot in your next post.

Go to Piriform's website, and download the free version on the left.  Click Download from Piriform.com (the FileHippo link requires an extra click). Or if you want to use a portable version of Speccy (which doesn't require installation), click the builds page link and download the portable version. You will now be asked where you want to save the file. The best place to put it is the Desktop, as it will be easy to find later.

After the file finishes downloading, you are ready to run Speccy. If you downloaded the installer, simply double-click on it and follow the prompts until installation is complete. If you downloaded the portable version, you will need to unzip it before use. Right-click the ZIP file and click Extract all. Click Next. Open up the extracted folder and double-click on Speccy.

Once inside Speccy, it will look similar to this (with your computer's specifications, of course): p22004369.gif

Now, at the top, click File > Publish Snapshot. You will see the following prompt:

p22004371.gif

Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard

p22004372.gif

Now, once you are back in the forum topic you are posting in, click the p22004370.gif button. Right-click in the empty space of the Reply box and click Paste. Then, click Add Reply below the Reply box.

Thank you for your reply, I really appreciate it.

One thing I forgot to mention in my first post is that I also did a winsock reset, which did not help the issue.  Here is the speccy screenshot:

Although it's not listed as an installed program...it appears that McAfee Firewall is running.  Not sure how that happens.

Your Java is outdated, see Why should I remove older versions of Java from my system - http://www.java.com/en/download/faq/remove_olderversions.xml .

You have IE10 installed, while IE 11 is the recommended version for Win 7.   Info.   Additional Info.

You also have Sony Vaio Care installed (I know, Sony does that).  It is. in fact, a registry cleaner/optimizer and BC does not support the use of such.  See Registry cleaner - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Registry_cleaner AND Registry Cleaner, Animal - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/526247/tune-up-utilities-2014-problem/?p=3303494 .  I would uninstall Vaio Care and leave it off my system.

My suggestion would be to uninstall all components of McAfee, using the Uninstall Tool.  See Removing McAfee Automatically Section .

Use the Windows Firewall in lieu of McAfee, at least for a short while.

Install IE 11 and update all critical updates.

Either uninstall Java or uninstall the old/outdated versions and install the current version.  The outdated versions provide no value and increase your vulnerability to malware.

When all this uninstalling/installing is done...I would run the chkdsk /r command and follow that with the sfc /scannow command.

Then...see how the system runs.

Chkdsk From Command Prompt, Win 7 - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/496613/contextmenu-is-causing-explorerexe-to-crash/?p=3067880

Run sfc scannow command prompt, Aura - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/579699/missing-uxthemedll-file/?p=3736491

Thanks for your reply.  I have removed McAfee and Vaio Care.  Regarding Internet Explorer, I no longer use it, I only use Chrome and Firefox.  Is there a way to uninstall it completely rather than updating it?  It doesn't show on my list of programmes in Add/Remove programmes, so I'm not sure how else to remove it.  If you would still recommend updating then I will do so.

Please let me know, I will then do this and go ahead with the chkdsk and scannow.  Thanks again for your help

It's not possible to uninstall IE in Windows 7, only make Firefox or Chrome your default.

You still should update to IE 11...and install all critical updates...you need IE 11 to be able to install critical updates.  Aside from that, use the browser of your choice, as John stated.

OK, thank you.  I have downloaded the latest version of IE.  On doing this and restarting, it still took forever, but when it booted up, the graphics had returned to normal.

I then ran chkdsk again and it booted up with basic graphics again.  Also ran scannow , it said it did not find any integrity violations - after running that, graphics had again returned to normal.

The error message on start up has gone and the boot time has definitely decreased, although it is still longer than usual (2-3 minutes).  Is there anything else I can try?

If boot time is the concern...you should probably take a look at your startup items.

A simple startup manager tool would be Startup Delayer, Standard (there is a paid version, not necessary).  You can download the Standard version to your desktop and then install it.  Go through the normal screens and accept the default setup.  That will result in a screen reflecting your current startup items.  After adjusting that screen so that all items are easily seen, take a screenshot and post it as an attachment in your next post.  You can use A Thousand Words to take the screenshot.

There is no reason that iTunes should be in startups.  I would either disable it or remove it from startups.

You do have an Event Viewer error about the Iastor driver...I don't have any experience with Intel items, but from what I've read, this can be a troublesome item.  Someone more familiar with Intel files/drivers will have to advise regarding that Intel startup items.  Not sure why some are stopped, while some are running..

As an additional thought for your data safety, I see no evidence in the logs that you have a backup system installed; you can set one up for under $100 and it will save your bacon if the hard drive ever fails, a virus or crash corrupts your main partition, etc. Especially considering that you use the computer for your business, weekly backups should be a part of your normal business practice. This website is full of folks who are desperately trying to retrieve data from a crashed operating system, when all they would have to do is take a few minutes and restore their backup and they are up and running like nothing ever happened. Just a month ago I had a client bring her laptop in with all the data encrypted from an encryption virus. She lost everything, family information, college projects, irreplaceable family photos...everything. One backup and one hour and she could have had everything back. Just a thought.

I have removed itunes from the list of startup programmes.

Regarding the backup, I agree with you and its something I've been meaning to do for a while.  My work files are mostly stored online so there is nothing essential I would lose, but its still something I am going to do once the issues are sorted.  Thanks for reminding me :)

I have noticed that the orange exclamation mark is showing on my start menu indicating there are updates to be installed.  I have restarted 3 times and the icon is still there.  Is it just a backlog of the IE updates being installed perhaps?  On that note, if I follow the instructions given above to disable IE, will critical updates still be installed in future, or would it need to be enabled for that?

I would leave IE11 enabled, and keep it updated. You don't have to use it.

You need to do a shutdown (not restart) to apply the patches.
