Hello,  first time poster here, and naturally because of a computer problem.  I found a similar thread regarding this topic, and the OP got some great support but the OP stopped posting.

I tried some trouble-shooting myself but havent had any luck.

I have a similar problem as seen in this threat: /http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/609160/help-problem-with-disk-defragment/

I ran an antivirus and Malwarebytes several times.

I discovered this after doing a disk cleanup and then intending to do a disk defrag since my computer often runs slow and runs 50%+ CPU usage when doing very little hard processing.

The laptop I'm using is older, an HP G60, running Windows 7 Home Premium w/ 4 Gigs of Ram.  I primarily use Firefox for web browsing (the second greatest CPU usage next to scvhost(netsvcs) when my computer is running slow).  I use Avira, Malwarebytes, and SuperAnti-spyware as my primary security programs.  All free versions.

I can provide logs and reports as needed.

Thank you very much for time and assistance.  I am glad there is at least one active tech forum in 2016...

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
List last 10 Event Viewer log
  List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size.

Click Go and paste the content into your next post.

Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy taking care to post the link of the snapshot in your next post.

Go to Piriform's website, and download the free version on the left.  Click Download from Piriform.com (the FileHippo link requires an extra click). Or if you want to use a portable version of Speccy (which doesn't require installation), click the builds page link and download the portable version. You will now be asked where you want to save the file. The best place to put it is the Desktop, as it will be easy to find later.

After the file finishes downloading, you are ready to run Speccy. If you downloaded the installer, simply double-click on it and follow the prompts until installation is complete. If you downloaded the portable version, you will need to unzip it before use. Right-click the ZIP file and click Extract all. Click Next. Open up the extracted folder and double-click on Speccy.

Once inside Speccy, it will look similar to this (with your computer's specifications, of course): p22004369.gif

Now, at the top, click File > Publish Snapshot. You will see the following prompt:

p22004371.gif

Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard

p22004372.gif

Now, once you are back in the forum topic you are posting in, click the p22004370.gif button. Right-click in the empty space of the Reply box and click Paste. Then, click Add Reply below the Reply box.

Attempts I've made to address/bandaid these issues include Stop Service of wuauserv through Task Manager, and deleting a folder in Task Scheduler called WDP which was an attempt to fix Task Scheduler (As a fix to Disk Defrag)

Speccy hard drive status of "Warning" and your defrag problems seem to point to a bad hard drive, IMO.

Thanks for your help.  Hopefully someone here can help verify although that sounds like a pretty bad case scenario :(

Please download and run SeatTools for Windows.

Before the installation begins you will be prompted to either Decline or Accept the terms of the installation, click on I Accept.

Once the installation begins you will see an image similar to the one below.

seagate3_zps1fa1f71c.jpg

1.  SeaTools for Windows will search for HDDs and SSDs on your computer.  Please remove any external storage devices connected via USB ports.

2.  Detected Drives will list the HDDs and SSDs found.  Place a check mark in the drive box you want to run the scan on.

3.  You will see Basic Tests toolbar above Detected Drives, move the mouse pointer over this to open the test options.  Please click on Long Generic Test

4.  This will start the scan.  When the scan is complete you will see the result under Test Status , please post the results in your topic.

 seatools4_zpsd7balf76.png

5.  The test will indicate either Pass or Fail.  Post the results of the scan in your topic.

6.  Click on Help, then click on View Log File.  If the scan failed take a screen shot of the Log File and post it in your topic.

The test shouldn't take very long.  I would hold off on doing anything until the scan is complete.  It has been almost 18 minutes since your last post.  If you started the scan then it should be over by now... normally.

Weird.  When I clicked on long test initially it said Long Generic (2:07)  Which at first I wasn't sure if that was minutes or hours, but I ran it and its been counting down from 2:07 since, its at 01:11 at the moment and 44% test status.

After following dc3's advice, after testing is over, please consider copying your data folders and files onto available and trusted external media.  I'm hoping you will be able to safely, without problems, save your stuff.

I will work on that.  Don't have a large external harddrive unfortunately.  Is there a way to connect my laptop directly to my Home desktop to transfer files?

The scan took a lot longer than expected, it just finished and slowed down significantly from the beginning progress.  I was doing some processing despite advice on here (in hindsight probably shouldn't have done this during a work day).  I shut it all down later once I recognized how slow it was going.  It did pass the test, however I did get this message about 3/4 the way through the scan.

You asked if you could use your computer while the scan ran, I suggested that you not.  Because of the interference I'm not sure I trust the results.  Please choose a time when you can run this scan again without using the computer for anything else while the scan is running.  I would also like for you to do the following.

Please download GSmartControl and run it.

When GSmartControl opens it scans your computer for all mass storage devices.  When the scan is finished it will display all of the drives found.  Double click on the drive which contains your operating system.

In the next window that opens the Identity tab is selected which displays all of the data pertaining to your drive.

gsmartcontrol1_zps8bkdopna.png

Click on the Perform Tests tab.  When the next window opens select the Short Self-Test, then click on Execute.

When the scan has completed it will show that the drive either passed or failed.  If it failed click on the View Ouput.  Copy the text and paste this in your topic.

Backing up your important data is something you should be doing on a regular basis, especially if you are using this computer for business, which it does appear to be.  The best way to do this is to store this data on removable media, like an external hdd, flash drive, cloud storage, etc.  If you have an external hdd you can use a program like Macrium Reflect to clone your C: drive so you have a duplicate copy of this drive.

Family and loved ones will always be a priority in my daily life.  You never know when one will leave you.

I ran both today, unimpeded.  The Long Generic took the estimated 2 hours, and passed, the GSmartControl also passed :/
