ok my mother bought a compaq mini tower , i was cleaning it out and noticed it did not have a case fan . i wanted to put one in it to help with air flow. i had one laying around so i plugged it in and it would not come on, so i used a molex cable . it works with the molex cable but my question is , is this normal for the computer cas fan plug not to work in a computer without a case fan?

IMO...it makes no difference which plug is used for case fans.  I use molex connectors for all of mine because there is no reason not to connect to the PSU directly that I am aware of.
