I never have any previous versions available for any of my files. What would I need to configure for them to be created?

Windows 7 was the last operating system which included saved files, these are used for System Restore for example.  Window 8 / 8.1 or Windows 10 you will have to connect an external mass storage device to save your files.  The link below will provide you with instructions for setting this up.
