Recently I have been suffering constant freezes.  As far as I can tell it started after a difficult driver installation for my graphics card.  I received a single BSOD naming one of the drivers as the issue, then after that I started with these freezes.

They happen randomly but I have found that using the online or computer based versions of Dell's SupportAssist triggers them as well.  Often during the freezes I get a message "Device "Nvidia GeForce GTX 680m" Cannot be ejected or removed" or something like that as I cannot remember the exact wording but this does not always show up though I suspect that is because it freezes before it can reach the screen.

I tried contacting nVidia through their live chat support but nothing they asked me to try worked to solve the problem. I do not think it is a hardware fault, but cannot figure out the problem.  Every hardware test I have run has come back full pass, including the boot diagnostics that came with the system and Windows Memory Test.

My system specs are:

 OS - Windows 7 Professional SP1 64 bit

This is the original install from when I received the computer.
The OS came pre-installed, so I suppose it is an OEM version.
I bought the computer February 2013

CPU - i7-3630QM 4 core (2 threads per)
Video Card - Integrated: Intel HD graphics 4000

                     Discrete: nVidia GeForce GTX 680m

· System Manufacturer - Alienware
· Exact model number m17xR4

· Laptop or Desktop? Laptop

Please wait until it freezes again, then generate this report:

Please do the following:
- open Event Viewer (run eventvwr.msc from the "Run" dialog)
- expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")
- right click on the "Administrative Events" heading
- select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."
- save the file as Admin.evtx
- zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")
- upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).

FYI - If we're looking for Event ID 41 errors (unexplained shutdowns), there's more info on that here:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2028504

While waiting for a reply, please monitor your temps with this free utility:

SpeedFan v. 4.5.1 and later (free from here:  http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php ) can log temperatures in a CSV file:
You may not need to log temps.  If uncertain, please ask.

To make it work (log the temps to a file) you have to do BOTH of the below:

1. Enable logging in general: Configure...Log...check "Enabled" then click on OK to save.

2. Enable logging for specific checks: Configure...Temperatures..left click on each sensor, then click on "Logged" at the bottom of the Window (for our purposes we want them all) then once you've selected "Logged" for all sensors, then click on OK to save.

The log will be located at C:\Program Files (x86)\SpeedFan

Naming: log files are named SFLogYYYYMMDD.csv, where YYYY is the year (four digits), MM is the month (2 digits, zero padded) and DD is the day (2 digits, zero padded). If a file already exists by that name, the file that already exists is renamed according to the following naming scheme: SFLogYYYYMMDD-CCCC.csv, where CCCC is a increasing number. The new file is then created with the standard file name scheme.

Notes: whenever you change the options related with logging, SpeedFan starts a new log file.
NOTE:You may want to turn logging off when we're done - as I don't know it's impact on performance or on the system.

Although you appear to have a reasonable number of Windows Update hotfixes for this version of your OS, please double check for any new Windows Updates.  It only takes one update to cause a problem, so it's essential that you have all of them.  The actual number is not important.  Rather it's important that you checked manually, installed any available updates, and didn't experience any errors when checking or updating.

D: drive only has less than 7% free space.  Windows likes 15% free space in order to perform stuff "behind the scenes" without adversely affecting the system's performance.  Please free up 15% on ALL hard drives (you can get away with 10% on larger drives and won't notice a large performance penalty).  Low free space can cause BSOD's - but the actual amount depends on the files being used by the system.

Bluetooth drivers aren't installed, please install them.

Alcohol 120% ( and Daemon Tools software) are known to cause BSOD's on some Windows systems (mostly due to the sptd.sys driver, although I have seen both dtsoftbus01.sys and dtscsibus.sys blamed on several occasions).

Please un-install the program, then use the following free tool to ensure that the troublesome sptd.sys driver is removed from your system (pick the 32 or 64 bit system depending on your system's configuration):  New link (15 Aug 2012):  http://www.duplexsecure.com/downloads (pick the appropriate version for your system and select "Un-install" when you run it).
Alternate link:  http://www.disc-tools.com/download/sptd
Manual procedure here:  http://daemonpro-help.com/en/problems_and_solutions/registry_and_sptd_problems.html
NOTE:  The uninstaller may not find the SPTD.sys driver.  Don't worry about it, just let us know in your post.
NOTE2:  The latest version has an SPTD2.sys driver - the uninstaller is on the same page as the SPTD.sys driver - just download the version for W10!

The memory dump blames video - but this is not unusual in cases like these.

If the above suggestions don't help, then try removing and reinstalling the video drivers

If that doesn't work, then try these free hardware diagnostics:  http://www.carrona.org/hwdiag.html (start with the video tests)

Well it did not take long for a freeze to happen.  One happened as I was loading up my computer for the first time at school today, so the admin report is attached.

As for temperatures I have been monitoring them fairly steadily since this began with CPUID HWMonitor and there was only a single incident where they ever got high which was just after I ran the boot diagnostics, and possibly some other tests beforehand.  Still, I have downloaded SpeedFan and will have it log temperatures for a bit just in case, the impact seems negligible.

I try to always keep my Windows up to date though I do have it set to wait for me to manually install. I had just updated not long before posting here (no more than a day) however there were several updates (mostly for Office components) ready to install today, which I've since done.  There was one listed as an Optional install however (KB3172605) that I have not yet installed.

I realize that D: was on the low side. It is only a 60GB drive that was originally supposed to be an OS drive. I have still removed a few things to boost it to over 15% free space to be safe.

I am aware that I have a "Bluetooth Peripheral Device" listed without drivers.  I have tried to figure out what it is and properly install drivers for it but so far have been unable to find any solution.

On your advice I did uninstall Alcohol 120% as I've never really used it so it was no real loss.  As for Daemon Tools I do not actually have that installed (unless that is related to Alcohol).  I did use the remover to take out sptd.sys.

As for the video drivers I have already re-installed them quite a few times in attempting to solve this issue both before and during my interactions with nVidia.

I will run those diagnostics, hopefully they won't force the freeze like Dell's do.

As for the drivers, I try to keep everything up to date here too, but I'll be certain to double check with the links you have provided, thank you.

The Admin log doesn't show anything significant that I can see.
Most often this is suggestive of a hardware problem - so running the diagnostics is still the most important thing at this point.

Please let us know the results of all of the diagnostics when you've completed them.

I thought I would make a small update.  I have not run any test at an extended length of time but so far every one seems to have passed without error.  Furmark ran for a while (over 1 1/2 hours total) at various stress levels and no issues, the temperature never passed 68C.  VMT could not run on my GTX (failed to start the CUDA test every time) though my integrated card passed the express test fine. I also ran OCCT for a short time though I could not figure out how to test the GTX, only the integrated card again.  And I ran the Intel Processor Diagnostic Tool as well, though not the full 120 min version yet, and it also passed everything.  I'm not sure what to run next.

Edit: One minor note, I upgraded the RAM after these issues started, so I'm very doubtful that it is faulty, though it is possible.

The best test for a hardware issue is a fully updated, clean reinstall of Windows from known good recovery media.

That way, the Windows installation is presumed to be good, and there is no 3rd party soffware (so it can't be the reason).

Does this mean I have to wipe all of my other data out first? Because I would lose an awful lot of irreplaceable information including a few programs that I could no longer re-install because the installation material is unavailable now.

Yes, you would lose all of that.

There are a couple of options here:

- backup your data and find new programs to replace those that you can't reinstall

- make an image of your hard drive.  That way, if the clean install doesn't work, you can put the image back onto your hard drive - and the system will be just as it was at the time that you made the image.

I use Acronis TrueImage (a pay-for program).  I have seen others recommend Macrium Reflect - but I have no experience with it.

I am backing up what I can, but am waiting for my new HDD to arrive before I do this, which is expected to arrive on the 26th. I have already moved over 400GB onto my backup drive.  As for the programs, a few of those are unique so I will be unable to replace them.  I may look into Acronis Truelmage while I still have a little money left from college funding just in case. I still need to scour the current HDD in order to make sure I don't miss a file saved in an unexpected location, but I have a bit of time before the HDD gets here I guess.

If you don't want to miss anything, then you'll have to make an image of the drive (either with Acronis or Macrium)
You may not need it - but having an image means that you can go back and pickup anything that you may have missed.

Okay, I have re-installed and everything.  It seems like the issue has been resolved though I cannot use IE now though as I never had before that is not much of an issue for me.  Only other issue right now is that my Firefox seems to be behaving strangely, the tabs page shows for a second when I open a new tab, then blanks out.  Nothing is there.

Edit: I should mention that this was after I imported my profile back into it, and only recently has it started occurring after a few days of normal behavior.

I would either repair/refresh Firefox (Help...Troubleshooting Information...Refresh Firefox)

or uninstall and install a clean, fresh copy.

With IE and Firefox issues - one has to wonder about networking, networking drivers, and any othe programs that might be accessing the internet.

Well, with Firefox, the issue turned out to be a popup blocker extension that was somehow interfering with the new tab's display.  IE on the other hand has never worked since the clean install except for version 8 which comes as part of the install...  As far as I can tell this is the last remaining error my computer is having other than Windows Update thinking a couple of my drivers are outdated and recommending new ones.
