I'm just checking to see if this computer is good or not. It's having problems with Internet Explorer, and I'm not sure what the cause of it is. Don't tell me to get Firefox, or I'll slap you.

Hello,

It's having problems with Internet Explorer, and I'm not sure what the cause of it is. Don't tell me to get Firefox, or I'll slap you.

Well, first of all, you have to understand that, when you are using betaversions, as in this case IE7, that it is totally normal that you can have problems. That's why they are called betaversions. So you can't really expect from us that we help to fix the issues that can be caused because of a betaversion. The issues are in the program itself.

So, just let us know what EXACT problem you are having...

Well, it was happening when I wasnt using the beta, so I just used it to see if it would work better.

When you open IE, the whole computer pretty much goes unresponsive uless you CTRL+ALT+DEL it. With the beta, it doesn't do that. It takes about 7 or 8 mins to START loading the page, then it's normal again. When you click on a link, it takes another 7 or 8 mins to start loading again. I have cable, and I know cable isn't quite that slow,.

Let's clean up a bit more here...
I see you have Registry Cleaner installed - I do not recommend this tool, because it's supported by malware in most cases (popups related to registry cleaner are being shown).
So I recommend you uninstall it if you didn't buy it.

* Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following:

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/...rch/search.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = :0
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {77701e16-9bfe-4b63-a5b4-7bd156758a37} - (no file)
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Registry Cleaner] "C:\Program Files\Registry Cleaner\RegClean.exe"
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [DellSupport] "C:\Program Files\Dell Support\DSAgnt.exe" /startup
<== not recommended to run at startup
O4 - HKCU\..\RunOnce: [McWebDownlMgr] C:\DOCUME~1\Dave\LOCALS~1\Temp\McDMTemp007 (2)\DwnldMgr.exe /runkey

* Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Then check if you are having the same problem in safe mode (choose safe mode with networking support)

In case you don't, then this is mos probably caused because of your McAfee. I've already seen many issues before with McAfee where after some updates it caused problems with Internet explorer.
Here a similar issue:

You know what? This computer is doing really badly. Thanks for the help, but I think it's beyond the point of no return (or fixing). It was giving me a "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_DRIVE" when I restarted the computer normally, tried safe mode with networking 3 times, same blue screen. Just safe mode worked, then I restarted and now it booted successfully.

Should I just tell the guy to format and reinstall XP? Internet Explorer wouldn't be a problem then .

Aaah, you were trying to fix this for someone else? I have no clue what other things you performed in between though..

Next time -- don't install beta versions on computers which are not yours ;)

Whatever you choose to do with this computer is fine with me -- By the way, did you read my post about McAfee?

The computer has been off since that reply. For IE7, he agreed to install it. He was there, watching me. We thought that since IE6 didn't work at all, we might as well try IE 7 beta.

And I'd uninstall McAfee but he is one of those people that thinks if you don't have an antivirus or firewall installed for 5 seconds, you'll get a virus. McAfee is also the only AV and FW that he knows. I don't think I'm interested in trying to teach him how to use AVG Free and whatever firewall is better than McAfee.

Thanks.

And I still think that McAfee is the cause here though, seen too many issues with McAfee and latest updates lately.
But if you don't test it and uninstall it, you won't know.....
If McAfee is indeed the cause -- well, if he doesn't want to use an alternative, which I understand if he purchased it -- it's better to contact McAfee with these issues.

But first we have to be sure if it's indeed McAfee causing this, and the only way to find out is uninstalling it. If he's scared that he'll get infected within 5 minutes, then tell him to enable his Windows firewall.

Don't worry about malware here - this isn't a malware related issue.

As I thought... well, there are several things you can do..
You can install an alternative Antivirus and firewall which are free.
Avira is a great antivirus and Kerio is a great firewall. (look in my signature for the right downloadlocations).
But in this case and as you already said, your friend doesn't feel comfortable with using another firewall+AV since (s)he used to McAfee and most probably also purchased it -- so the best way is to contact McAfee and tell them about this issue.
But before you do, check first if there are any updates for McAfee, so install the latest version from their site - maybe this issue is already resolved in their latest install.
(if you purchased it, the registration key remains valid)
