Recently CPU usage has been much higher than normal. Some sites (via Chrome) can consume 20-30% on their own and spiking at 100% when loading - for some reason Malwaretips is one of the worst offenders. Usage isn't permanently high but will often spike to high levels.

Also, video streaming is much more CPU intensive, frequently reaching 100% and causing stuttering/stopping.

The problem doesn't appear to be related to the fairly common W7 update issue as CPU usage is still high when WU is disabled.

Any help would be really appreciated.

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
List last 10 Event Viewer log
  List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size.

Click Go and paste the content into your next post.

Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy taking care to post the link of the snapshot in your next post.

Go to Piriform's website, and download the free version on the left.  Click Download from Piriform.com (the FileHippo link requires an extra click). Or if you want to use a portable version of Speccy (which doesn't require installation), click the builds page link and download the portable version. You will now be asked where you want to save the file. The best place to put it is the Desktop, as it will be easy to find later.

After the file finishes downloading, you are ready to run Speccy. If you downloaded the installer, simply double-click on it and follow the prompts until installation is complete. If you downloaded the portable version, you will need to unzip it before use. Right-click the ZIP file and click Extract all. Click Next. Open up the extracted folder and double-click on Speccy.

Once inside Speccy, it will look similar to this (with your computer's specifications, of course): p22004369.gif

Now, at the top, click File > Publish Snapshot. You will see the following prompt:

p22004371.gif

Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard

p22004372.gif

Now, once you are back in the forum topic you are posting in, click the p22004370.gif button. Right-click in the empty space of the Reply box and click Paste. Then, click Add Reply below the Reply box.

Regarding Speccy, when I click on Publish Snapshot then Yes I get the message 'Error connecting to publishing server'. I understand this may be a bug. I have tried several times the last half hour but still the same error message.

Try again later.  Like many a website, sometimes the volume is a problem.

You have a lot of security applications on that computer! ESET Smart Security, HitmanPro, VoodooShield, Zemana Antilogger...

ESET Smart Security ia an excellent security suite, one of the best. The rest is overkill. Since security software will often scan the Web, it's not surprising you're seeing high CPU usage.

- Did you regularly make a backup of your personal data ? I fear you've got HD problems.

- Open CMD.exe and run the "Chkdsk /f" command to check your file system. And then run the "SFC /Scannow" command.

Finally I was able to copy the Speccy link:

http://speccy.piriform.com/results/bGk78mrMMFFJhJnSXUB8dKL

Regarding my Hard Drive, Hard Disk Sentinel says it's fine:

Attached File  HD status.PNG   43.78KB   1 downloads

Regarding my real-time protection, Eset, Zemana and VoodooShield (HitmanPro is on demand only), they were working fine together for some time before I started getting this high CPU. I've checked by disabling Zemana and VoodooShield but CPU is still high.

Also, I'm unable to run chkdsk because a while ago (long before this current issue) I forgot my login password and did this to change it but still haven't reverted utilman.exe to its original state:

http://www.wikihow.com/Crack-a-Windows-7-Password

I guess I should do it.

Aside from the corrupt file system error...I see nothing which I would worry about.  Although you claim high CPU-usage, there is nothing indicating high RAM-usage or exceptional usage created by your array of security programs.  No problems that I see with the hard drive or CPU temps, no problems with svchost processes.  Even your Chrome use of resources is lower than that of most people posting Speccy data in response to a data request by a member here.

The file system error does not necessarily point to the hard drive...the file system can become corrupt on a hard drive which is in good condition.  I don't understand your explanation about being unable to run chkdsk...but the chkdsk /r command apparently needs to be run.  As Willy suggested, I would follow that up with running the sfc /scannow command.

Not sure at all where you get the idea that high CPU-usage occurs.  I suggest that you use Task Manager to note the process running whenever you think such occurs and post such.  You can take a screenshot of Task Manager and post it and we all will (hopefully) have a better idea of what's going on.

Thanks a lot. At the time of the Speccy snapshot CPU usage was at least 90%. I couldn't see anywhere where CPU %age is mentioned in Speccy though.

Here are a couple of screenshots showing the high CPU with about 5 Chrome tabs:

Well...all that says to me is what I already knew...Chrome uses more resources than any other browser normally reflected here.

If you are going to monitor CPU usage...I suggest that you find a different browser, since this seems to be a known Chrome issue..

- HD is OK.

- Turn on the Windows Firewall ASAP !!!!. (Is there a conflict with ESET ??)

- Too many plug-ins ? Or conflicting plug-ins ? Conflicting programs ?

- Memory usage is a stubborn problem with Chrome. Chrome is VERY "reluctant" to release memory. Even (the installed) Cleanmem can't persuade Chrome to release memory.

- Do you have a socalled Ramdisk installed ? It could explain why the "Mini Tool" reports a memory of 3 Gb but SPECCY says 4 GB.

- The amount of Services running is too low. There's a program that knows what Services need to be running. Run "Tweaking's Windows Repair"

http://www.tweaking.com/

http://www.tweaking.com/content/page/windows_repair_all_in_one.html

and run - at least - repair #27.

You may need to re-install a number of programs after this.

ESET Smart Security already has a firewall. Only run one at the time.

Restart your computer in Safe Mode with Networking. Then, try Chrome and Firefox again.
