Found this workaround when doing a simplified chat/message thing that reloads the page every 10 seconds - not a bad process in Firefox but Explorer gives a white flash during page reload. Very annoying.

Most suggestions I ran across involved going all sorts of fancy and convoluted and mentioned Ajax and such - but playing a bit revealed a go at it sideways solution.

Do not reload the page!

Instead, have the page submit to itself.

No Explorer white flash but user functionality is the same and only a slight modification to scripts and pages (just need a hidden form so you have something to submit).
