One day out of the blue, my "Freedom" anti-spyware scanner (through high-speed internet company) tells me I have AlfaCleaner in a registry. Freedom cannot delete it and offers no advice on how to get rid of it. After several weeks of ignoring it, I noticed that the computer began to behave oddly at times (such as MS Money 2004 wanting to reinstall each time I restarted the computer, and slower than normal performance. I became suspicious because this only began to occur after the detection of AlfaCeaner. I decided to take some action to remove AlfaCleaner, as I read some horror stories about what it can do to a computer. I googled "remove AlfaCleaner" and was directed to Bleeping Computer. I followed the instructions and installed SmitRem. It didn't detect anything, so nothing was uninstalled. I also installed and ran SpyBot and Ad-Aware, but both scans failed to show any infections. I was then led to HijackThis and have posted the HijackThis log below. Do I even have AlfaCleaner??? I would be extremely grateful for assistance in this matter. Thank you so so much!!

Hello floridaguy,

Welcome to Bleeping Computer

Do I even have AlfaCleaner???

Let's find out. :flowers:

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Thanks,

Hello again,

Nope, they both came up clean, and your log looks clean as well. However, if you did have it, it may be in your System Restore, and your new AV is picking it up there. So, let's do this:

Click Start Menu > Run > type (or copy and paste)

%SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it ( something you'll remember) and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

Next goto Start Menu > Run > type

cleanmgr

Click OK, Disk Cleanup will open and start calculating the amount of space that can be freed, Once thats finished it will open the Disk Cleanup options screen, click the More Options tab then click Clean up on the system restore area and choose Yes at the confirmation window which will remove all the restore points except the one we just created.

To close Disk Cleanup and remove the Temporary Internet Files detected in the initial scan click OK then choose Yes on the confirmation window.

Let me know if your AV is still picking it up now.

Thanks,
tea

Hello Tea,

Many thanks for the help. I followed your instructions (i.e, created a new restore point, followed by Disk Cleanup), and then I ran my AV. Alfacleaner was still detected and it gave its location as the following: key "hkey_local_machine\system\currentcontrolset\enum\root\legacy_alfacleaner." Any additional advice you can provide is greatly welcomed.

Thank you.

Hello again, Tea!

I was reading one of BleepingComputer.com's tutorials about the "Registry" and used regedit.exe to locate AlfaCleaner on my machine. It looks so easy to delete the subkey "legacy_alfacleaner" under the "root" subkey." Is it that simple?

Thanks!

Good heavens, are you ready to shoot me? I'm so sorry I didn't get your reply. :flowers:

Before you do anything like that, please back up your registry:

Back up the registry.
Do Start->Run, enter regedit and click OK. With the cursor on 'My Computer' in regedit, right-click and select Export. Save the file as saved.reg and then exit from regedit.

Since you've been there already, yes, it's that easy.

Let me know how you're getting along. I promise to come here and look often for your reply.

Regards,
tea

Hello Tea,

I followed your instructions and was unable to delete the key/subkey. I right-clicked on "Legacy_Alfacleaner", then clicked on delete, and I get the message "Error with deleting key." Legacy_Alfacleaner contains a subkey named 000 which inturn contains a subkey called LogConf (and this contains the values). I am unable to delete any of them.

What do you suggest?

Hello,

Remember to back up your registry as instructed before.

Copy the part in bold below into notepad and save it as Appid.reg
Set Filetype to "all files"

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_ALFACLEANER]

Doubleclick that file and confirm you want to merge it with the registry. Reboot your computer afterwards.

Let me know how that goes.

Hello Tea,

I edited the registry as instructed and ran my spyware scan - Alfacleaner is still present. Is it okay to keep the insertion (the quote you sent me) in the registry, or should it be removed?

As usual, many thanks for all your assistance.

Hello,

Stubborn thing huh? Hang in there. I'm going to ask the gurus if they have something else to get rid of that that we haven't already done. I'll get back to you ASAP.:flowers:

Regards,
tea
