Greetings again good folks at BC. Been awhile, however that's a good thing. It means I've been able to successfully help others with their PC issues without having to bother you kind people. Nevertheless, this one 2010 era lappy has me stymied for now. Since it appears I hit a dead end, (outside of a complete wipe and reinstall of the system), I am now turning to you experts at BC in an effort to raise this poor maligned lappy like a phoenix out of the ashes. I had it in mothballs since mid-2015 when the owner abandoned it, but the owner now has a need for it. Similar to you folks, I work on a gratis basis, and I also do house calls. It's just one of the ways I try to pay it forward as those who have helped me have done.

This post might be kind of verbose, but then again I've been known for that.  :thumbup2:

System Configuration details:
Gateway Laptop NV55C38u
Pentium Dual-Core 64 Bit, 2.13GHz, P6200 Arrandale
4GB DDR3-1066
500GB SATA HDD 5400 rpm
Atheros Wireless LAN Adapter 802.11b/g/n
Broadcom Gigabit LAN 10/100/1000Mbps

OS & 3rd Party security software installed (all require updating or renewal):
Windows 7 SP1 Home Premium (64-bit)
ESET Internet Security (Out of date version 8)
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (Free version)
SpywareBlaster (Free Version)
HostMan
Key Scrambler (Free Version)

Problem:
Cannot access Internet at startup or after (both LAN &WLAN). A Network Service svchost.exe file cannot complete and continuously runs at 50% of the CPU resources and thus, constipates the whole system for around 15 or so minutes where at that time it finds and connects to the network, yet still fails to get Internet access. So, I go into Task Manager and end the Network Service "svchost.exe" file process that is still running at 50% and when ended a bunch of System and Local Service svchost files, etc. start to run at 100% CPU usage. Then the maligned Network Service svchost file kicks back in at 50% CPU and I once again end it, and so it goes for several iterations 'til it finally stops running with "Media Enabled" Internet access , however it doesn't have IPv4 or Ipv6 Connectivity. The whole process to get to this point takes about 45 minutes at which point the CPU usage and temps finally drop to normal.

This laptop fails to connect whether on the owner's wireless network or mine. At both locations all other wireless PC based systems function flawlessly.

Remedies I've tried when I first got it in 2015:
Scanned system with both ESET and MBAM. No threats found.

Revert To Last Known Good Configuration – (no change in performance).

System Restore to the date point when I last fixed it a month before this anomaly started happening, several times in both Safe and Normal modes – (could not access a file necessary to restore; even after I tried other previous dates, I received the same response).
Note: In the expanded list the date point when I last fixed it is currently no longer available for me to even try to restore it to again. Say what?

Using the Command (DOS) Prompt as an Administrator, to no avail I tried to:
Release and Reset the IP Config for both IPv4 & then IPv6 – (failed to complete after restart).
Purge/Clear the DNS Cache – (failed to complete after restart).
Reset Winsock – (failed to complete after restart).
Error message stated "could not access a necessary file, etc."

In the Registry performed several various complete system Find searches and also checked msconfig and didn't notice anything suspicious.

Suspected culprit for this anomaly:
WinCleaner OneClick Professional Version 12 from Business Logic Corp.

About a month after I last cleaned up the system for them, the owner decided, (for what reason I'll never know), to throw $20 down the toilet and buy this piece of crap, snake oil salesman scam, so called PC miracle stick, and worse yet, actually try to use it. Lo and behold, after using it they crippled their lappy. What a surprise. Methinks this junk tool should be renamed to "OneClick WinCrapper Pro".  :(

I asked the owner, "Why in the world would you even consider buying this when your lappy was already running like a top?" Response: "The commercials made it look great." I asked if they deleted anything in the registry or any Windows files and, as I expected, they didn't know. I also asked if they did a backup of their system and registry before running WinCleaner and it was a no. (Oh, happy day!)

Bottom Line:
My greatest fear is that it requires a complete wipe and restore from day one (ca 2010). (That's a whole lot of manual restoring.) Any thoughts or help is greatly appreciated. I'm contacting you on a separate system from my "Fortress of Solitude" with this lame lappy nearby.

Best regards,
Mojo

P.S.
Wasn't sure which forum to post this issue in, so feel free to redirect it to the proper one if need be.

Update:

OK, browsing the downloads at BC, I downloaded and ran the Windows Repair v3.9.11 tool. I followed the instructions and ran it twice as recommended. 'Lo and Behold I can now access both the home network and the Internet. I immediately uninstalled the expired ESET Internet Security and downloaded, installed and updated a trial version, which I will activate when the trial period expires with one of the purchased licenses I have on hand. I then proceeded to update MBAM, Spywareblaster and HostsMan and ran full scans with ESET and MBAM, which in turn found zero threats.

Since I had previously disabled the BITS and Win Update services due to high CPU and RAM resource hogging issues, the CPU and memory usage percentages were operating as expected once the startup apps completed. (CPU idle to low single digit%; RAM 22% to 30%.) So now I enable Win Update and the RAM slowly increases from 30% to typically 70% - 95%. The CPU now shows 50% - 53% as a minimum. I let it run overnight and I see that the update window is still continuously spinning in Limbo as if it just started to check for available updates at 53% CPU and 73% RAM with core 0 and core 1 temps per SpeedFan at 150oF and 168oF. (Mind you, this lappy is sitting on a cooling stand with two 120mm fans. These cores typically run in the 90o to 110o range.) I canceled the update and turned off Win Update. Everything drops back to normal: CPU, RAM and core temps. This is no surprise to me since the netsvcs svchost.exe files for update have been a roadblock all along.

I then run Windows Troubleshooter for updating and get the same results as previously above, so after a couple hours of watching it in Limbo and elevated resource/temps, I cancel it with no results.

For the record my network speeds were running around 140 - 150Mbps.

Bottomline:

I can't update Windows 7 SP1 Home Premium. (Update History had 259 previous updates listed.)

I recall reading about someone who had a similar problem and ran several AV and MBAM scans all ending in zero threats found, only to later learn they actually had a rootkit lurking in the bowels playing havoc. Since I am leery of running certain tools to uncover such without expert guidance, I'll simply mention it.

I downloaded and ran Mini Tool Box. Results are posted below.

Regards and thanks,

Mojo

Personally, I don't feel they need it, and since it crippled their PC to begin with, I reckon I can uninstall it. However, I'm not sure that having it reside for the time being would create a problem. I know next to nothing about this program or its restore possibilities. My guess is restore doesn't exist.

Regards,

Mojo
