Is a Complete ReInstall of Windows My Only Option?

In I had to reinstall Windows in June. It took a month for things to be usable again. The first time I installed Win7, I was able to update it to a newer version, but now MS has removed that option. What I'm using now, I don't think is as robust as the one I was using before. Still things working pretty well.  Then I stupidly chose to setup a home group. A moment of complete insanity. This is a one-person computer that no one ever touches, but me. Now I am having problems again. I removed the computer from the group, but that doesn't really make the Group disappear, does it.That may not be the source of my problems, but it was about then my troubles began.

An application I installed about the same time was TimeMachine. It didn't work, and that also caused problems.

A couple of programs quit working. Settings I make to the system and (some) applications don't stay. I changed an applications type icon because there was only the little generic ugly, and I changed settings in a couple of word processor and a writing application. They stay a while, maybe minutes, maybe hours, and then they revert. There were other issues, but all related to changes I make not sticking.

One morning when I fired up the computer, it ran a message that said Windows failed to boot and it was going to make changes to the system. Ever since then, I've had more issues with trying to make changes. For instance, I changed a registry key, and the system just changed it back. There was some message in event viewer about a change being made by someone without the correct permissions.

I tried multiple things, including chkdsk, scannow and finally resorted to Tweaking.com Windows Repair.  Now I get Access Denied messages and, though it is supposed to fix permissions, mine are now very limited, when once I was able to do just about anything.

I hate, hate the idea of doing a complete reinstall - again - so soon. Besides, I've now used the last activation of a program I use everyday. It will cost me $100 for another license. I am thinking of trying a repair install. Does anyone have any better idea?

I'm so tired of fighting. I spend far more time trying to fix things, than I do enjoying my computer. Going back to my steady, reliable XP looks better and better to me.

Thanks.

Hi,

Hopefully I can help you. Let's gather some information first before we do anything.

Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:

  • Flush DNS
  • Report IE Proxy
  • Reset IE Proxy
  • Report FF Proxy
  • Flush FF Proxy
  • List Hosts
  • List IP Config
  • List Winsock
  • Last 10 Events
  • Installed Programs
  • List Devices / only problems
  • List Partitions

Click Go and note the saved Result.txt on your desktop, to copy into your reply

Download Security Check from here or here and save it to your Desktop.

  • Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
  • Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

If one of your security applications (e.g., third-party firewall) requests permission to allow DIG.EXE access the Internet, allow it to do so.

Please download Farbar Service Scanner (FSS) and run it on the computer with the issue.

  • Make sure the following options are checked:
    • Internet Services
    • Windows Firewall
    • System Restore
    • Security Center/Action Center
    • Windows Update
    • Windows Defender
    • Other Services
  • Press "Scan".
  • It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.
  • Please copy and paste the log to your reply.

Hi ephemeral sonder.  Thank you so much for answering. Sorry I didn't answer sooner. Had to work. Then I found someone had answered, but there was a load of other stuff to do. Now I've got a few minutes. I've used MiniToolBox before. Recently, in fact, but I don't understand all the info it gives.  Here's the stuff you asked for:

Hi kalmly,

Let's take this one step at a time and see if we can resolve it.

Please run this from a command prompt

C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe /k %windir%\System32\reg.exe ADD HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System /v EnableLUA /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f

Then restart your machine.

Then from an elevated command prompt please run

netsh winsock reset

Then restart your machine.

Then from an elevated command prompt run

chkdisk /f

Restart the machine when prompted. The fix will run on reboot and will take some time.

When the computer starts again please run from an elevated command prompt.

sfc /scannow

How did you go? How is your machine working now?

Hi,

Uhh, well thanks for trying to help, but problems are worse than ever. Here is how it stands now.

Last action was to run sfc /scannow from an elevated command prompt.  This was the (unfortunate) result of the run:

Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.  Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log  For example C:\Windows\logs\CBS\CBS.log

Of course I went to the CBS log. I've opened this log several times in the past. But no such luck this morning. Its properties box security tab, shows me a view I've never seen before. It says, To continue, you must be an administrative user with permission to view this object's security properties.  Do you want to continue? Continuing, takes me to Permissions for CBS.log which shows that my account, Administrators (Kells7Administrators) has Read and Write Permissions, but I still can't open the $%#! thing.

Other issues abound and I've only just started poking around. One application wouldn't start unless I chose to Run as Administrator. It does that when it has been newly installed.  Another, an office suite, has reverted to a trial version and requires that I contact the company, leaving me with no access to its many files.

Lost cause?

That's not an unusual response from that command, nor is it the end of the world. Even if you could open that log it is huge and would probably be unreadable to you, let's not worry about that yet.

Because of your degraded permissions I'm concerned that there may be a malware issue with your machine. Let's run a couple of tentative scans and see what we can see.

2hrmr9e.jpg  Please download rKill to your desktop.

  • Right click the file > Run As Administrator.
  • If you have any difficulty running the the tool please use an alternative from this page
  • A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.

2zh1g08.jpg  Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.

  • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
  • Right click and "Run as Administrator".
  • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
  • On completion a log will open, note the saved JRT.txt on your desktop to copy into your reply

malwarebytes_icon_mini_by_linux_rules-d9  Please download 51a5f31352b88-icon_MBAR.pngMalwarebytes Anti-Rootkit (MBAR) to your desktop.

  • Warning! Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit needs to be run from an account with administrator rights.
  • Double click on downloaded file. OK self extracting prompt.
  • MBAR will start. Click "Next" to continue.
  • Click in the following screen "Update" to obtain the latest malware definitions.
  • Once the update is complete select "Next" and click "Scan".
  • When the scan is finished and no malware has been found select "Exit".
  • If malware was detected, make sure to check all the items and click "Cleanup". Reboot your computer.
  • Open the MBAR folder located on your Desktop and paste the content of the following files in your next reply:
  • "mbar-log-{date} (xx-xx-xx).txt"
  • "system-log.txt"

Please copy the logs into your next reply.

How is your machine running now?

Hi,

Bet you thought you were rid of me. :)  Just gone for the day.

I ran rKill and this is what it had to say:

Program started at: 09/04/2016 06:40:41 AM in x64 mode.
Windows Version: Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1

Checking for Windows services to stop:
 * No malware services found to stop.

Checking for processes to terminate:
 * No malware processes found to kill.

Checking Registry for malware related settings:
 * No issues found in the Registry.

Resetting .EXE, .COM, & .BAT associations in the Windows Registry.

Performing miscellaneous checks:
 * No issues found.

Checking Windows Service Integrity:
 * No issues found.

Searching for Missing Digital Signatures:
 * No issues found.

Checking HOSTS File:
 * HOSTS file entries found:
  127.0.0.1       localhost

Program finished at: 09/04/2016 06:40:46 AM
Execution time: 0 hours(s), 0 minute(s), and 5 seconds(s)

********************

Then MBam's Anti-Rootkit and this is what it said:

Malwarebytes - Scan Finished: No malware found.

********************

No doubt you will notice that I did not run the Junkware Removal Tool.

These things scare me, and this one, as far as I can tell, does not give one a chance to intervene when it decides it doesn't like something. That could end up costing me more time and a big chunk of cash. If you know of a similar app that would let me decide what it eats and what it doesn't, I'd love to know of it.

********************

In answer to your last question:  The system is running smoothly. In event viewer are a ton of these errors on 9/2/2016 and earlier: The file system structure on the disk is corrupt and unusable. Please run the chkdsk utility on the volume \Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy2.  All day yesterday, only three insignificant errors show, and today none are listed as yet. A run of chkdsk this a.m. tells me: Windows has checked the file system and found no problems. I am however stuck with not being able to do things that edit the registry and so stuck with the funky icon issues.

I did get into the CBS file briefly. :) Here, perhaps are/were the pertinent entries?

2016-09-02 14:37:11, Info                  CBS    Failed to find localized custom property bag [HRESULT = 0x80070490 - ERROR_NOT_FOUND]

2016-09-02 14:37:11, Info                  CBS    Failed to find localized custom property bag [HRESULT = 0x80070490 - ERROR_NOT_FOUND]

Earlier, the Tweaking.com Windows Repair logs are full of these entries in the Set Permissions Error Log.  The data area passed to a system call is too small.

Unless you have more suggestions I think I'm stuck.  Do you think a repair install would fix the issue or not? I really appreciate your help. I owe you a coffee, or a beer, or whatever makes you smile.  Thank you so much, mate.

Hi kalmly

The tools I recommend do not remove malware, they quarantine it. When we get to the end of the process and your machine is working correctly we then remove the tools along with all the quarantined items. We can put anything that has been quarantined back. This is not CNET and I won't guide you to download malware or highly destructive crapware that will cause further issues for your machine. Most of the tools we use on this site have been created by security researchers, not by companies. Just like the staff helpers on here have altruistic intentions.

That said, your system is showing signs of corruption and permissions issues. I would eliminate malware being a cause of that before doing a repair install as many malware infections would remain afterwards and the problem would begin again.

It's up to you what you want to do now. :thumbup2:

These are adware entries and are probably not the cause of your issues, let's clean up your system and then we'll try to address the SFC issue.

29bgcgg.jpg  Please download AdwCleaner and save to your Desktop.

  • Right click and "Run as Administrator"
  • Click on the Scan button.
  • After the scan has finished, click Clean
  • Click on the Report button...a logfile will open in Notepad for review.
  • A copy of all logfiles are saved in the C:\AdwCleaner folder which was created when running the tool, or you can save it to the desktop to be easily found for your reply.

malwarebytes_icon_mini_by_linux_rules-d9  Please download and install MalwareBytes Anti-Malware.

  • You may want to uncheck the free trial for the premium version during installation.
  • Let the database version update on first run, before proceeding
  • Click "Scan now"
  • Click "remove threats" to remove all and follow the reboot instructions.
  • To export the log click on History > then click your scan log > Export > text file
  • Save on your desktop

Please copy and paste the logs in your reply.

Just a bit of Adware removed. There's nothing there that's causing your current corruption issues.

Let's try fixing your SFC issue now.

Download myjIXnC.pngSFCFix and run it.

Please copy and paste the log in your reply, if there are uncorrectable errors.

If not please go ahead and run

sfc /scannow

from an elevated command prompt.
