In I had to reinstall Windows in June. It took a month for things to be usable again. The first time I installed Win7, I was able to update it to a newer version, but now MS has removed that option. What I'm using now, I don't think is as robust as the one I was using before. Still things working pretty well. Then I stupidly chose to setup a home group. A moment of complete insanity. This is a one-person computer that no one ever touches, but me. Now I am having problems again. I removed the computer from the group, but that doesn't really make the Group disappear, does it.That may not be the source of my problems, but it was about then my troubles began.
An application I installed about the same time was TimeMachine. It didn't work, and that also caused problems.
A couple of programs quit working. Settings I make to the system and (some) applications don't stay. I changed an applications type icon because there was only the little generic ugly, and I changed settings in a couple of word processor and a writing application. They stay a while, maybe minutes, maybe hours, and then they revert. There were other issues, but all related to changes I make not sticking.
One morning when I fired up the computer, it ran a message that said Windows failed to boot and it was going to make changes to the system. Ever since then, I've had more issues with trying to make changes. For instance, I changed a registry key, and the system just changed it back. There was some message in event viewer about a change being made by someone without the correct permissions.
I tried multiple things, including chkdsk, scannow and finally resorted to Tweaking.com Windows Repair. Now I get Access Denied messages and, though it is supposed to fix permissions, mine are now very limited, when once I was able to do just about anything.
I hate, hate the idea of doing a complete reinstall - again - so soon. Besides, I've now used the last activation of a program I use everyday. It will cost me $100 for another license. I am thinking of trying a repair install. Does anyone have any better idea?
I'm so tired of fighting. I spend far more time trying to fix things, than I do enjoying my computer. Going back to my steady, reliable XP looks better and better to me.
