I don't need a high power machine as I just do word and spreadsheet processing and surf the net.

I also plan on using a Linux OS, without bloatware, etc.

Is there a reasonable chance that I could still get 5 years of reliable use out of the computer in the link below?  Or should I stick to a newer refurbished?

thanks

Oh yeah, That machine should SCREAM with linux on it, and with a 1st gen i5 you can def get 5-7 years off of it easily, (you can always upgrade single components later on eg, RAM, Processor, HDD)

but Yes, that machine should run for at least! 5 more years with *Nix on it.

I think it's a good deal for a working computer sporting an i5 CPU...typically you will find the leased/refurbished systems sport Core 2 Duos.  Same system available at Amazon, but $25 more.

There are numerous 4-5 year old systems availlable for perhaps $100....

Warranty not needed. (We use numerous 9-10 year old Dell Core2Duo systems in our office, all run fine year after year.......
