This morning my computer froze, so I turned the computer off and turned it back on again. When I got to the login screen I logged in and it had a black screen for a little while and I could move the mouse around. After about a minute it gives me a blue screen and restarts. When I tried to go into safe mode the computer froze. I can access task manager in the minute before it crashes, so I tried ending explorer.exe and re run it. Did not work.

Edit: It also occasionally can't find the HDD to boot from. It happens on an off.

I'm also using Windows 7. Or was.

This is the computer I use:

https://www.asus.com/us/ROG-Republic-Of-Gamers/ROG-G75VW/

I wanted to make sure this HDD and SSD would work if I needed to replace the one I have:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01IAGSD5O/ref=asc_df_B01IAGSD5O4474982?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&tag=cnet-pc-20&linkCode=df0&creative=395093&creativeASIN=B01IAGSD5O

And maybe some suggestions on a cheap HDD with a warranty. I'm looking for 1TB or more.

I don't know if the failure was just because the hard drive was old or if it was a virus. I was searching for free books for a class that I had and went onto some sketchy websites, but I did spyware and virus scans afterwards and they came up clean. I did install anti-spyware just yesterday as well, so I don't know if it deleted something important or not.

My computer has been kind of slow for the past week and it was making funny sounds a few month ago, which is why I'm having a hard time figuring out if it was a virus or old hardware. The computer is about 4-5 years old and I don't dust the fans very often because the computer is a pain to open without breaking parts of the panel off.

Thank you in advance!

Start with these free hardware diagnostics:  http://www.carrona.org/hwdiag.html

The first few are bootable, so you can run them even if you can't get into Windows

Then, please run this report collecting tool so that we can provide a complete analysis: (from the pinned topic at the top of the forum)   http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/576314/blue-screen-of-death-bsod-posting-instructions-windows-10-81-8-7-vista/
FYI - I don't often use the Perfmon report, so if it doesn't work please just let me know.
NOTE:  On problem systems it can take up to 20 minutes for the log files to complete.  Please be patient and let it run.

If you still have problems with it running, there's an alternate tool here (direct download link):  https://github.com/blueelvis/BSOD-Inspector/releases/download/1.0.5/BSODInspector-1.0.5.exe

NOTE:
Please zip up the (.ZIP) files - do not use .RAR or other compression utilities.
.ZIP is the type file that can be uploaded to the forums.

Update: I "fixed" my problem.

I used a hard drive to usb converter and grabbed the files I wanted to keep and put them onto my other computer. Although I forgot the website I worked all christmas break on :(

This is what I used: https://www.amazon.com/StarTech-SATA-Drive-Adapter-Cable/dp/B00HJZJI84/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1472429502&sr=8-1&keywords=hard+drive+to+usb

I was able to reboot the computer to factory new.

I'm assuming it was some kind of virus because the Hard drive seems to be working fine.

Question: I am still wondering if the SSD I mentioned would work with my computer.

Thank you

The SSD will probably work in your laptop - but it's awfully small

You'll have to take steps to move programs/files to another drive.

This will complicate things if you need to reset to factory again.

I suggest spending the extra money to get a larger SSD, it's easier in the long run.

Good luck!
