Greetings BSOD Kernel Dump Experts,

I hate to report that my Windows 7 laptop has been crashing often for the past few weeks. It happens when I close the lid to sleep the laptop. Surprisingly, I can prevent it from crashing by observing whether if it sleeps. If it refuses to do so after a few minutes, I know it will crash, so I hold the power button and shut it down. But sometimes, I forget to watch it sleep, and it crashes.

You probably can tell that it first happened in 2014, but suddenly, it's started crashing (not always complete BSODs due to me cutting power) very often. Apparently, it seems to be caused by a bug that Microsoft issued a hotfix for:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/975599

I tried the hotfix, but it returns this error message "This update is not applicable to your computer".

Thanks for any help!

System specs as requested:

· Windows 7 Home Premium
· 64-bit
· Windows 7 Home Premium
· The laptop came from Staples, so yes it comes with a "Certificate of Authenticity".
· Bought it on August 12, 2012
· I have never re-installed the OS. It came with Windows 7, and it's not a dual-boot system.
· Intel® Pentium® CPU B970 @2.30GHz 2.30GHz
· Intel® HD Graphics (??????)
· Toshiba
· TOSHIBA Satellite C855-S5236
· Laptop

P.S. I do have avast! installed. Not sure why perfmon says I don't?

Perfmon reports that Windows Update is disabled.  Please enable it.

Only 120 Windows Update hotfixes installed.  Most systems with SP1 have 350-400 or more.  Please visit Windows Update and get ALL available updates (it may take several trips to get them all).
The actual number is not important.  Rather it's important that you checked manually, installed any available updates, and didn't experience any errors when checking or updating.

The WER section of the MSINFO32 report blames oanet.sys - a component on your Online Armor Firewall.

Please uninstall it (for testing).  While testing use the Windows firewall.
If this does stop the BSOD's and you wish to continue using the Online Armor firewall, then please download a fresh copy of the latest compatible version from the Online Armor website

Finally, the memory dumps implicate rtl8192Ce.sys - a driver for your wireless adapter.

Please:

- download a fresh copy of the latest compatible driver from the Toshiba support website (for your model)

- uninstall the current wireless adapter from Control Panel...Programs and Features

- install the freshly downloaded drivers

- monitor for further BSOD's

Good luck!

Thanks! Kinda weird why BlueScreenView said that the NT Kernel was causing it ...

I've uninstalled Online Armor with Revo Uninstaller Free. Thing is, I can't update Windows. Windows is "Checking for Updates" forever. I did manage to install a Windows Update to check for more Windows Updates though. Should I ask for help in the Windows 7 forum, or will doing it in Safe Mode with Networking do the trick?

Also, do you know the difference between these four drivers from the Toshiba website?

Realtek Wireless LAN Driver

Realtek Wireless LAN Driver

Realtek Wireless LAN Driver

Realtek Wireless LAN Driver

I tried one of them, and the problematic wireless adapter driver didn't seem to update. If I go to the Device Manager, it says the wireless adapter driver is up to date.

Here's the link for the Toshiba drivers (you may have to select/search for my model and sort by name to view it):

http://support.toshiba.com/support/driversResults?freeText=3385522

Thanks!

Mod Edit:  Merged with existing topic in Crashes/BSOD forum - Hamluis.

Hello everyone,

I was looking in the event log yesterday and noticed these errors in the Event Viewer:

The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk1\DR3.

An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk1\DR1 during a paging operation.

The device, \Device\Harddisk1\DR2, has a bad block.

The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk1\DR4.

Obviously, to me they're very concerning. I already have a system image and backups of important files. Last night, I already did CHKDSK /R. The Toshiba HDD/SSD alert says that my hard-disk is working properly.

Apart from that I also have BSoDs, that I am currently trying to fix with usasma's help, and the processor getting a little too hot. Is this a sign of catastrophic hard-disk drive failure? I need to make sure fast just in case it dies suddenly.

Attached are the Event Log errors and below is the CHKDSK information and the system specifications.

Thanks!

A while ago I had an email conversation with Nir Sofer (the author of BlueScreenView).

Due to changes in how memory is used, BlueScreenView wasn't always able to be 100% accurate.
Also, in quite a few of your memory dumps, the NT Kernel is actually blamed:

ntoskrnl.exe (also seen as ntkrnlpa.exe, ntkrnlmp.exe, or ntkrpamp.exe) is the kernel (core) of the Windows operating system.  It is protected by security features and the Windows System File Checker.  As such, if ntoskrnl.exe was to blame, you'd be experiencing many more problems other than the occasional BSOD.

In most cases ntoskrnl.exe was blamed because a driver (typically a 3rd party driver) has corrupted the memory space that ntoskrnl.exe considers as it's own.  When this happens, ntoskrnl.exe typically finds unknown data (from the 3rd party driver) in it's memory space.  At this point the OS panics and throws a BSOD to prevent damage to the system.

If the culprit (the offending 3rd party driver) hasn't exited yet, then a BSOD analyst may be able to find traces of it in the reports/dumps.  If the culprit has exited, then the chase is on and further tests/reports will be needed to help identify what actually caused it.

More info here:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ntoskrnl.exe

Windows 7 has problems with updates/updating.

Try installing these updates first (there may be some duplication since I'm not a Windows Update expert and have compiled these from different sources):

These are the one's I try at work, and they usually work for me (and another tech):
KB3112343:  https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3112343
KB3102810:  https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3102810
KB3020369:  https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3020369 (from MVP Greg Carmack)
KB3161608:  https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3161608 (from MVP Greg Carmack)

Rollups (one tech uses this at work and it works for him):
KB976932:
KB3020369:  https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3020369 , then...
KB3125574:  https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3125574

A recent addition to the list that I haven't tested yet (but it seems to work - from what little I've seen)
KB3138612:  https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3138612

Look for the latest version number on the Realtek Wireless LAN Drivers:

:

CHKDSK does not check your hard drive.  Rather, it checks the file system on the hard drive (most often this is NTFS).

It may/may not be related to physical hard drive problems - which is why we suggest running hard drive diagnostics:  http://www.carrona.org/hddiag.html

As you are also having controller errors (and quite a few of them from the disk_errors.zip file) , this is a critical test to run.

In addition, as there may be other hardware issues, please run these free hardware diagnostics:  http://www.carrona.org/hwdiag.html

I've finally managed to update Windows, thanks to the standalone updates you provided, and it's now up to date according to the Control Panel. Also, I have set Windows Update to "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them". But, the bad news is that I couldn't update the Realtek Driver because of this error:

Windows cannot find
'C:\Users\bears\AppData\Local\Temp\tc50158700e.temp\Win764\setup.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again.

However, the Realtek Driver was able to be updated via Windows Update under the Optional Updates section. Anyway, I had a horrible experience with Windows Update — there were so many errors preventing updates from being installed!

So I think I'm all set regarding the BSoDs. I will continue to monitor the situation and will not install Online Armor again since it's no longer supported.

As for the hard disk diagnostics, I couldn't figure out where to download the Toshiba diagnostics from the page:

http://storage.toshiba.com/storage-services-support/warranty-support/software-utilities

It redirected to a new link, so I suspect that the page is now different from before. Because of that, I didn't run the hardware diagnostics too. What should I do?

Thanks!

I wouldn't worry about the Toshiba diagnostics - I haven't actually seen them used in years.

Instead, try the Seagate Seatools tests.

I ran the memory diagnostics overnight for 8 passes — it passed. I also tested the processor with the Intel Processor Diagnostic Tool. It too passed, and the contents of the log are below. I didn't run the other tests — they seem unnecessary. Should I?
