I found that Age of Empires 3 is a good starter. The units stats are not that hard to follow and grasp or can be mostly ignored. It's a medieval setting, with a heaps of civilizations to play. Plus the online community is fairly decent and not to toxic. The game mechanics are simple, build, train, DESTROY THY ENEMY! Plus i think its fairly cheap these days. Could be a good cheap option for a beginner who doesn't wish to commit right away.
