Hi, my build is 2 months old and I started having crashes about 2 weeks ago.
The screen goes black and the sound stutters, then about 5 seconds later I see the BIOS screen.
What I have tried:
I have read a lot of tech support forums regarding this issue and started troubleshooting. The first thing i tried was memtest and I think I got the issue narrowed down to three components, the motherboard, CPU, or power supply.
The reason I believe it is one of these three components is that memtest crashed (which is a USB bootable test). If the crash occurs on multiple boot devices, while error checking the RAM, then I can eliminate these two components. The RAM is supposed to crash during this test, so I am assuming this would not make the memtest crash.
I also am not receiving a BSOD when in windows 10. I have also found a correlation between charging my phone on my computer and the computer crashing (This could be a coincidence, but I felt I should mention it). Nothing is overclocked right now, the GPU used to be and I have since removed the overclock, even though I have seen the GPU crash and it is nothing like this crash I keep having.
Now, I am making this post for three reasons:
1. I couldn't find any additional troubleshooting steps
2. To check my logic, do my conclusions/assumptions make sense?
2. How can I narrow down the issue further? (I do not have an extra power supply, motherboard, or CPU)
Thank you everyone for your help.
Below is a list of my components:
CPU: Intel Core i5-6600K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler
Motherboard: Asus Z170-E ATX LGA1151 Motherboard
Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3000 Memory
Storage: Samsung 850 EVO-Series 500GB 2.5" Solid State Drive
Video Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 1070 8GB SC Gaming ACX 3.0 Video Card
Case: Fractal Design Define R4 (Black Pearl) ATX Mid Tower Case
Power Supply: EVGA 650W 80+ Gold Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply
Monitor: Acer XB270HU Abprz 27.0" 144Hz Monitor
Keyboard: Cooler Master Storm QuickFire Rapid Wired Gaming Keyboard
Mouse: Logitech G700s Wireless Laser Mouse
Headphones: Astro A40 TR Headset
EDIT: The crash occurs approximately every 4 hours of use, on average.
EDIT2: I just noticed today that every time it crashed, my phone was charging. I pull an estimated 3.5A from the 5V rail with my phone charging, 2A otherwise. I will avoid charging my phone and see if it makes a difference. This almost certainly isn't the cause, but you never know.
