Hi,

I'm trying to keep the costs down of a new laptop purchase so my main question is whether I will need 8 GB RAM or if 4  GB is sufficient. My budget is 1000 GBP.

I've completed the template below.

I would prefer to stay with Dell (3 previous Dell's) as I have found them reliable and the onsite next day business repair excellent. I've been quoted approx 1000 GBP for a Latitude 3350.  The specs of this machine are listed at the bottom of this message. Can you identify if there are any features I cut out to lower the price?  The quote is missing MS Office which will take me over budget.

Currently, I have a Dell Vostro 3360  running Windows 7 Professional (4 GB RAM, 64 bit, Core i5-3317U 1.7 GHz) which I've been pleased with and my usage patterns are not expected to change much in the next 3 years.

However, features I'd like to improve upon with the new purchase:

(1) Quicker start up, shutdown of the system and launch of applications

(2) SSD 256 GB (for speed and reliability as I move around a lot)

(3) Fewer Crashes with MS Word/Endnote docs (a growing problem)

Other critical features for me are:

(1) 13 inch screen

(2) 3 year next day onsite repair

(3) Windows 10

(4) Webcam

I do not need:

(1) A touch screen

(2) Video/Photo editing facility

(3) Good audio

Laptop or Desktop?

Laptop

My budget for the new computer is:

<1 K GBP including ProSupport and update of MS Office

What are the primary uses for this computer (IE: mail, web browsing, programming, games, etc)?

Web browsing, MS Office applications often running simultaneously (Large Word Documents with Figures, Powerpoint with figures and occasionally video clips, Excel Sheets), MATLAB.

What software do you intend on using on the computer?

MS Office, Endnote, Acronis True Image, PDF viewing software,

Do you play games? If so, what type of games?

Never play games.

Do you tend to have a lot of programs running at the same time, or do you close every program when you are done using it?

All above programs may be running simultaneously

Do you store a lot of pictures or music on the computer?

Some video and pictures.

Will you be overclocking?

No

Location for online shopping/shipment/prices?

Dell

How many monitors are you planning to use?

Occasional external monitor use

Do you need peripherals? OS?

Windows 10

Any particular reason why you are upgrading?

Current Dell Vostro 4 years old and ProSupport not renewable.
