Fixing a computer for a family member who is running Vista home premium.

He has one profile on his laptop which is also the administrator, when logging on today it loaded and logged in as usual.

However, it is as though the user has been completely reset! The background is the default picture, desktop items reset, internet favorites are all gone. It even wants him to enter the author name when going onto excel etc. Also when you click on 'documents' all his files have disappeared, although when you go through computer>local disk>users>his profile>documents some of them are still appearing. It has allowed me to copy all his remaining documents onto a memory stick so we have those backed up and I have also transferred these back into his normal documents folder. Although it is usable, I wouldn't want to leave it if there is an underlying issue or is it best to just continue with how it is?

Thank you :)

Seems to be that the user profile is corrupt, so the system created a temporary profile. If it happens again, then I suggest to have the user follow the instructions here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-ca/kb/947215

If I am helping you and I don't respond within 2 days, feel free to send me a PM
