I recently updated to Windows 10 Professional Anniversary edition (build 1607) and I am having trouble using the windows defender limited periodic scanner.

After a reboot the limited periodic scanning option turns itself off. I can enable the setting and it will stay on until I reboot my computer. It shuts off about a minute or so later after start up.

I am currently running an up to date version of Avast antivirus free with web shield, file shield and mail shield enabled.

I also have a laptop that runs over the same internet connection. The laptop is running Avast antivirus free, but without the mail shield. It is also running the Windows 10 Anniversary edition (build 1607). However, it is running Windows 10 home edition.

The laptop is able to run the Windows Defender periodic  scanning without issue.

Both the laptop and desktop have Windows Firewall enabled and are using the same router firewall.

Any suggestions?

PS: Both computer are currently up to date. A windows update check yields no available updates.

Hi Guys,

The problem with the Windows Defender periodic scanner seems to have resolved itself with the latest build update of Avast (12.3.2280) released August 19, 2016.

I'll post back if the problem reappears.

Thanks for your time. :-)

Glad to hear the issue has been resolved.

However, keep in mind that since Windows 10 Defender includes anti-virus protection, it typically is disabled by the installation of a third-party anti-virus program like avast. Windows Defender recognizes the install and automatically disables itself when other anti-virus products are used to avoid conflicts. For a more detailed explanation, read the IMPORTANT NOTE about not using more than one anti-virus program in this topic.
