Hi guys...

Having a number of issues here, but need to tackle them one at a time.

BSOD is happening too frequently, which then leads to the memory dump, etc.

So first thing I chose to do was update drivers and Windows (7 Ultimate),

But, when I try to update Windows, the status bar stays at 0% forever.

I have Googled this and it seems common, but I can't seem to find what to do about it.

I guess once I get past this, I can move onto the BSOD.

Along that line though, after a BSOD, when I reboot it just starts normally 90% of the time.  Other times I get a black screen, but my cursor (arrow) is there and it moves fine.

Specs:

CPU:  AMD Phenom II x4 965  3.4 GHz  (new FX-8350 still sitting in box)
MB:  Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3P
OS:  Win 7 Ultimate/64 bit
GPU:  AMD Radeon HD 7970 w/3 GB ram (was used for bitcoin mining, could be part of my problem)
Mem:  16 GB DDR3   (I forget brand/speed, but typical gaming RAM)
SSD:  240 GB Intel SSD

Any advice on getting to the bottom of Windows refusing to update ?

Thank you.

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
List last 10 Event Viewer log
  List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size.

Click Go and paste the content into your next post.

Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy taking care to post the link of the snapshot in your next post.

Go to Piriform's website, and download the free version on the left.  Click Download from Piriform.com (the FileHippo link requires an extra click). Or if you want to use a portable version of Speccy (which doesn't require installation), click the builds page link and download the portable version. You will now be asked where you want to save the file. The best place to put it is the Desktop, as it will be easy to find later.

After the file finishes downloading, you are ready to run Speccy. If you downloaded the installer, simply double-click on it and follow the prompts until installation is complete. If you downloaded the portable version, you will need to unzip it before use. Right-click the ZIP file and click Extract all. Click Next. Open up the extracted folder and double-click on Speccy.

Once inside Speccy, it will look similar to this (with your computer's specifications, of course): p22004369.gif

Now, at the top, click File > Publish Snapshot. You will see the following prompt:

p22004371.gif

Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard

p22004372.gif

Now, once you are back in the forum topic you are posting in, click the p22004370.gif button. Right-click in the empty space of the Reply box and click Paste. Then, click Add Reply below the Reply box.

I see that you reflect AutoKMS as a scheduled task.  I normally have seen this only where the legitimacy of the Windows install was in question...and/or malware was involved in the topic.

I suggest that you follow the instructions at Preparation Guide, Before Using Malware Removal Tools and Requesting Help - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic34773.html and initiate a new topic at the forum reflecting the Prep Guide.

Once that is done, this topic will be closed to prevent confusion.

Thanks :).

Louis

Ok. So... your mention of the AutoKMS reminded me that I needed to input my activation code.  I upgraded to Win 8, then Win 10, then went back to 7 and couldn't find code so took another route. Since then I had found it but never input my activation key.

I thought today when I input my key (had to input via the DOS route), maybe that is what kept me from installing updates.

Well... now it just says "checking for updates" and keeps checking and checking.  Doesn't even get me to the "installing 0%" anymore.

"Most recent updates: Never"

"Updates were installed: Never"

Not sure what that's about.

Been Googling... all I can find is mention of reinstalling Windows (ha)... or repair disk.

If this is clean install then do the following in order

If you have not installed IE11 download it here

If you have not installed .NET 4.61 download it here

Download and install the April 2016 convenience rollup. This will install all updates and fixes since SP1 up to April 2016. IE is required to access the Microsoft catalog.

Make sure you have this update installed before installing the July 2016 rollup.

Download and install the July 2016 rollup package

Go here and see if you have the updates listed installed. If not then download each and install. Also install the latest update client shown on the page if not installed.

You may have a problem manually installing the updates. This is because the Windows Update Service is running. Either disable it or reboot and immediately install the updates as the Update Service has a delayed start.

After installing all of the above reboot and if you disabled the Windows Update Service enable it. Check for updates. It should anywhere from minutes to a couple of hours.

Note: Windows 7 updates have been terrible since the intro of Windows 10.

Edit: I have not idea on the BSODs

Thanks John.

Step 1 and 2 go just fine..... but step three gets me to a status bar saying: "Searching for updates on this computer".... and it searches until I stop it.  (overnight).

Thanks Willy,

This too only got me to a the same status bar: "Searching for updates on this computer"

The link said this...

- Open in Task Manager the "Service" tab and highlight the Service called "Wuauserv". Then right click and select "Go to Process". Task Manager will re-open the "Process" tab and highlight one "Svchost.exe" process. If the highlighted "Svchost.exe" process has high CPU usage in combination with high memory usage (say >100 MB) then it's indeed this particular Windows Update problem.

When I did that, the Svchost.ece it highlighted was at 435MB.. so I was hopeful.

But for some reason I just can't get past the "checking for updates".

Edit:

After letting it check for an hour, a window just came up asking me to install updates.  Going to go through this and see what happens.

It also helps if you reboot and immediately install the update as the Windows Update Service is a delayed start. At least that worked for me.

You can disable the Windows Update Service in services.   Right click Computer > Manage > Services.

Well were good until next month when we will need to  manually install another update in order to receive the rest of the updates.

- Since you're not doing a re-install of Win 7, execute step 4 mentioned in the weblink I posted. (and that includes stopping the WU Service, just read it).

This is what I did.  Took a while, but it seemed to work.

Thanks for the help John.

Now once I get everything updated, I will wait and see if the BSOD is still an issue.

Yeah, I did just that.  Skipped to part 4, downloaded the updates and installed them manually. Immediately upon boot-up, as John suggested.

What a weird situation as some of them "checked for updates" for nearly an hour before finally allowing me to download them.  A couple of them were already installed I guess.

After these installs (restarted each time), I tried the normal Windows Update and it actually worked finally.

Installed all the important updates, then tried the optional updates and the process froze while creating a restore point.

Forced a hard boot, then just installed a few of them directed toward my brand of monitor, my CPU then one other.  Those 3 installed just fine.

I appreciate the help very much... from both you and John, and Louis earlier.

Will wait and see if the BSOD is still an issue (probably is), and will come back for help with that.

Man I tried so many things found via Google to get those updates working.

Thanks again !

This post helped me short cut a bunch of steps but it still wasn't working. One thing that I found through one of the links... be sure you turn on your system administrator account and use that to do the updates.  I was spinning and spinning and spinning for over a week trying to get this figured out.  Finally buzzing right along.

- Glad that I could help.

- Spread the word about this Windows Update fix.

- Feedback like this helps me to improve the guide to fix this problem.
