I am considering getting a new pc or upgrading internally if something can be identified that could use an upgrade that may help with the occasional lag I experience.

It's a custom build, not by me, maybe 6 years ago with 10 upgraded from 7.

If anyone has any recommendations for ways to test my system to sort this out, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Edit: forgot to add that my fans are constantly running despite blowing it out/

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
List last 10 Event Viewer log
  List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size.

Click Go and paste the content into your next post.

Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy taking care to post the link of the snapshot in your next post.

Go to Piriform's website, and download the free version on the left.  Click Download from Piriform.com (the FileHippo link requires an extra click). Or if you want to use a portable version of Speccy (which doesn't require installation), click the builds page link and download the portable version. You will now be asked where you want to save the file. The best place to put it is the Desktop, as it will be easy to find later.

After the file finishes downloading, you are ready to run Speccy. If you downloaded the installer, simply double-click on it and follow the prompts until installation is complete. If you downloaded the portable version, you will need to unzip it before use. Right-click the ZIP file and click Extract all. Click Next. Open up the extracted folder and double-click on Speccy.

Once inside Speccy, it will look similar to this (with your computer's specifications, of course): p22004369.gif

Now, at the top, click File > Publish Snapshot. You will see the following prompt:

p22004371.gif

Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard

p22004372.gif

Now, once you are back in the forum topic you are posting in, click the p22004370.gif button. Right-click in the empty space of the Reply box and click Paste. Then, click Add Reply below the Reply box.

FWIW, the note in my OP about fans constantly running, I meant they were loud. I dug a little deeper and found the culprit was a collection of dust built up under the processor fan. Fan is no longer annoyingly loud. Don't know if that would have any impact on performance by time will tell. Thought I would mention it.

Thank you for the reply and your assistance.

IMO, none of the data reported indicates any hardware problems of any sort.

As for the idea of "upgrading" or buying a new system...what would be the reasoning?  If you just want a new system...or want some capability which your present system does not provide...that's understandable, since such demands no justification.

As for your perception of "lag"...I would start with a thorough cleaning of dust from the inside of the case...and see what effect that has on the lag.

Thank you for your assessment, much appreciated.

As for the lag, on occasion it has been slow to navigate compared to units at work. Granted work has a dedicated team to keep things up to snuff.

It was late last night I located the loud face issue and cleaned it. Haven't had time to tell if there is improvement yet but will give it a whirl when return home.

Thanks again.

Power supply manufacturer and model?

Assuming you have stock cooler on CPU, no wonder it gets loud.

Lag may be because of bad PSU, not enough RAM or slow HDD. Windows 7 is optimized for machines with fast disk access (read: SSD) and Windows 10 seem to do same.

I will check the power supply make and model when I return home this evening.

Yes the stock cooler I believe is the fan I cleaned under. Was quite the mess and the loud noise is gone.

Have been considering the ram. Can handle 16, I believe but only have 4 currently.

16GB RAM is around $60 or so, not much.

I checked for upgrades at crucial but kinda question the compatability they claim. It was more expensive there but found some more in the range you mentioned when shopping around. Just debating between 2 sticks of 8 or 4 of 4.

I can say, there has been an improvement after cleaning the dust behind the processor fan. Also, I have 16 gigs of ram coming to replace the current 4 gigs I have installed. Going with 2 sticks of 8 rather than 4 sticks of 4.

2*8 GB is better than 4*4 yes.
