My hard drive died. A computer repair company kindly replaced the hard drive and transferred the data from the old to the new.

One problem is that I had a very large Outlook pst folder. (At least I think it's called the pst file.) It had numerous subfolders, etc.) When I opened Outlook on the new hard drive it simply had one large inbox filled with messages.

I had the old pst file backed up to an external hard drive. Is it possible to import the pst file from the external hard drive in an effort to recreate the subfolder system that I had?

There are some new emails on the new hard drive but not many.

Thank you for your assistance.

Thanks.

Here's the problem:

New pst file on laptop - this is a few days old

Old pst file on backup - this goes back for years

Old pst file = Old

New pst file = New

Solution: merge them.

Made backups of both

Moved old pst file to laptop

Renamed new pst file to "New1"

Renamed old larger pst file to "New"

As I read the instructions Outlook is supposed to open using the old pst file as the data file and I am supposed to add the new file as another part of outlook and then manually merge the two and delete the new. Sounds easy.

But Outlook opens. Says it can't find New and then crashes.

Ideas?

Thanks.

Or just delete and reinstall?

Delete and reinstall didn't work. Outlook still crashes instead of starting up.

@Hal06

Possibly the Old.pst file (renamed to New.pst) is damaged, too large or corrupt in some other way.

The following guide "About the Outlook PST-File" details in depth the PST file and PST file management in Outlook 2003 thru Outlook 2016...

Reinstall worked using a mix of old and new pat files. The bulk of the old is still missing. I'm sure it was very large.

I'm traveling now so I will be able to work on this on a limited basis. But will keep you posted.

Thank you.

Very much!

The reinstall worked for one time. Now Outlook immediately crashes upon opening. It will open in safe mode. It seems to have a problem with the profile or at least the last thing I see before it stops working is loading profile.

Thoughts?
