Hello,

Tried to log on to a shared computer this morning using the password I've used for a while. Got the message "invalid password or user name." Didn't have caps locked; rebooted. . .tried the usual. Figured I would change the password. . .no such luck. I put in the old password, typed in the new password twice, and got a similar message--neither the old or new password could be used. Was able to get over to the kids' side of the computer and log on. Hmmm.

I'm guessing I've picked up some malware. I routinely run HitMan Pro and McAfee Security. I catch a lot with HitMan Pro. The funny thing is, in the last couple of weeks, I've gotten two or three "notices" (can't figure out where they are coming from) that some malicious software was detected, along with the "offer" to "risk it this time". . .or purchase a different level of malware protection. The offer appeared to be from McAfee--but may have been fake, of course. Still, I can't help but think of the phrase, "Create the problem, then offer the solution."

In any case, I'd like to fix this without purchasing yet more software to scan for yet more problems, viruses, etc.

Any advice?

p22002970.gif Please download Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) to your desktop.
There are 2 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.

rKill.exe: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/10/
iExplore.exe (renamed rKill.exe): http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/11/

  • Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
  • If using Windows Vista, 7 or 8 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.

  • If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
  • Do not reboot until instructed.
  • If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.

If normal mode still doesn't work, run the tool from safe mode.

When the scan is done Notepad will open with rKill log.
Post it in your next reply.

NOTE. rKill.txt log will also be present on your desktop.

NOTE Do NOT wrap your logs in "quote" or "code" brackets.
Do NOT use spoilers.
Do NOT edit your reply to post additional logs. Create new reply. I'll not get any email notifications about edits so I won't know you posted something new.

Thank you so much. Unfortunately, I'm stuck on step 1 because I can't run anything. I keep getting a request for my "administrator password". . .and when I enter my administrator password. . .that worked yesterday and for years before that. . .I'm told the password is invalid. I must admit, I've not tried all of your suggestions yet, but what gets me is this: I note that some programs you've provided are marked as "needs to be run from an account with administrator rights." It would seem that the other programs would run without that. . .but the first one doesn't. I'll try a few more. Any other tips for getting around this problem?

Farbar and Mini ToolBox were the only programs I could access and run. Thanks for any additional help.   :)

To the best of my knowledge, I can only get at system restore in safe mode. . .and if I go to safe mode, same problem. . .I get asked for the administrator password, which doesn't work. Sigh.

The only thing I can suggest is to create new topic in Windows forum.

Hopefully someone there will come up with some idea.

Thank you for trying. I guess you were just asking for any clues with recent back-ups. But I can't access much of anything and I don't have screen shots of anything recent. . .I guess there weren't any clues in the clean-up programs I could run. Looks like I might be in for some real trouble here. Last shot and then I'll go elsewhere: When I attempt to run McAfee Security Scan Plus, I get the message that "We found some web risks that can potentially harm your PC." But I suppose that's useless information since I can't actually run the program. I'll try with a new topic but it looks my whole operating system is trashed. . .Thank you for all the attempts.

Okay, you will love the end of this story and it may help someone else: Out of sheer frustration and a "nothing much left to lose" attitude, I kind of randomly tried to run one more program to clean up whatever is going on. . .ComboFix, which I picked randomly and I got the same message I got with most of your other suggestions: I needed the administrator password. I tried a password I'd used in the past--nothing. I tried some passwords I've used elsewhere, but never as the main, administrator password--BINGO! On the third or fourth try, using a password I can only recall using in one other place (and I switched that out months ago) I got back into my computer! Unbelievable. . .at least to me! At first, I thought I must have changed the password and forgotten that I did it, but that seems the least likely scenario, as I've been using the same main password for at least 6 months and only felt the need to change it once. . ever. What seems more likely to me is some kind of malware going in. . .flipping and switching passwords that have been used in various places. It also makes me think I may STILL have some malware lurking in my system that I should try to clean up. I can also take this post somewhere else. . .I doubt that I'm the only one who has ever experienced this.
