For some reason I am unable to open up any games or other applications that I downloaded since buying this computer. On games that require daily patches (MMORPG's) it will get to the Download patch screen, actualy update the patch, and then nothing will happen and the app just closes. On other games it will not even start the Executable files.

Hello there and welcome to Bleeping Computer's security forum.
My name is David, I will be helping you with your log today.

It is a good idea to print off these instructions:
This will be useful as there is a possibility some of the instructions will need to be carried out where internet access is not available.
You may also like to save these instructions in word/notepad to the desktop where they can be easily found for the same reasons as above.
A print out of the instructions would be a good reference to make sure you don't yet lost.
Also, it is important that you complete the instructions in the right order, and also that you don't miss any steps out!
If you have any queries about the process or just general questions, just ask.

Please set your system to show hidden files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Please download Ewido Anti-Spyware and save the file to your desktop.
This is a free 30 day trial version of the program.
  • Locate the icon on your desktop and double click it to open the set-up program.
  • Follow the instructions on screen to install Ewido.
  • Run the program and you will meet the main screen.
  • Select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link
  • Next click the "Start Update" button; a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Now select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  • Close the program now, we will be running a scan a bit later.
Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following if still present:

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you click Fix Checked!

Now reboot into Safe Mode.
This can be done tapping the F8 key as soon as you start your computer
You will be brought to a menu where you can choose to boot into safe mode.
Make sure you choose the option without networking support.

Using Windows Explorer, please locate the following files/folders, and delete them if still present:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\svcpack.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\xqlnpb.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Damien Ternes\Application Data\ttao.exe
C:\Windows\xpupdate.exe
C:\WINDOWS\inetg <-folder

Launch Ewido by double clicking on the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab.
  • Then click on the "Complete System Scan" button.
  • If you have any infections you will be asked for an action - select "apply all actions".
  • Now select the "Reports" icon at the top.
  • Click "Save Report As" and save the text file to your desktop.
  • Close Ewido and reboot back into normal mode.
Please post the results of the Ewido scan in this thread.

Hey Chrisik.

Don't worry about the ewido scan coming up clean. It looks to me as though you saved the log before "applying all actions". This makes it look as though you didn't clean any of the items, when actually you did. The main thing is the ewido log is clean. I'm pretty sure that you have been infected with the latest link-optimizer rootkit.
These files are hidden from normal view, and it's imperative we remove these files as soon as possible.

Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following if still present:

O2 - BHO: Class - {5C15B50D-02E4-6E93-05CD-88C7AEC4A4C7} - C:\WINDOWS\ddnmq1.dll (file missing)

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you click Fix Checked!

Next click start > run
copy and paste the following line and hit enter or click ok.

C:\Documents and Settings

Now look carefully and tell me if there is a profile name you don't recognize, it will have a random name.

Run HijackThis, click on Open the Misc Tools Section
Click on Open ADS Spy
uncheck the "Quick Scan"
Check the "Ignore safe system info data streams"
Finally, click Scan button. ADS Spy will scan the system and report all the ADS present in the system.
Click Save log and post the ADS log back here.

Then double click gmer.exe
Let the gmer.sys driver load if asked.
If it gives you a warning at program start about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...say No.
Click the autostart tab and click scan
Wait for scan to finish.

Once done click copy
Open Notepad and hit ctrl+v to paste log.
post log please.

Finally, Start > Run > services.msc

Make the window larger so that you can see all colums. Fifth column tells you how a service starts, Local system or System ... now look if you see weird random characters in that column or the name of a file. If yes, what is the name of the service in the first column ? Next, doubleclick on the entry ... what's the path to the executable ?

Let me know all these things if you can. It's important to remove this as soon as we can.
Good luck, if you have any questions along the way just ask.
When you reply I'll try and get to the thread as soon as possible.

David

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 : aswt.dll (9728 bytes)
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 : aswt.dll (9728 bytes)

I can't find the gmer.exe file, not even under search., Also under the profile names, there is "Administrator" and I don't remember naming that User account, and when I go under Control Panel/User Accounts it gives me an Error saying "Wrong Number of Arguments or invalid property assignment".

Ok, that's fine. I forgot to get you to download gmer.exe, so that's why you couldn't find it!
The "Administrator" account is default on all computers, so don't worry there.

Please download the following file to your desktop:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/reg/olereg.vbs

Double click on the file and allow it to run.
Then try and access the user accounts applet in the control panel like you did before but got the error. Let me know if there are Any strange user names there (remember that Administrator is legitimate).

Download GMER from Here
Right Click the Zip and Select "Extract All"
Double Click gmer.exe to launch the program.

Please post that log.

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.
Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1, and press Enter.
A text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Please post back with the GMER log and the information asked.
Also post the smitfraudfix log.
Thanks, and sorry for the earlier confusion.

In addition to the above, I need you to download the following file:

Getservices.zip - Get list of XP/2000/NT Services

Extract the file to the c:\ drive. Then navigate to the c:\getservices and double-click on the getservices.bat file. A notepad will open up. Please paste the contents of that notepad as a reply to this post. It's a going to be quite long, so you might want to upload the file here as an attachment to this thread, whatever suits you best.

I've got enough info now, let's remove it!
Good luck!

1) Run Hijackthis again and open the "misc tools" section.
Click on "ADS spy"
Please complete the following for every username on the computer.
Click on the "scan" button and let the program do its job.
If entries are found select all of them, and click "Remove Selected".

2) Clean your Cache and Cookies in IE

° Close all instances of Internet Explorer .
° Go to your control panel and open "Internet Options".
° Click on the "General" tab.
° Click the "Delete Cookies" button, then the "Delete Files" button.
° When prompted, place a tick in the "Delete all offline content" box and click OK.

Clean other Temporary files and Empty the Recycle Bin

° Go to start and click on the "run" button.
° Type the following in the fox --> cleanmgr and click ok.
° Let it scan your system for files to remove.
° Make sure only Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are checked.
° Press OK to remove them.

Now log back into the administrator account (probably you).

3) A. Please download The Avenger by Swandog46 to your Desktop.
  • Click on Avenger.zip to open the file
  • Extract avenger.exe to your desktop
B. Copy all the text contained in the code box below to your Clipboard by highlighting it and pressing (Ctrl+C):

Registry values to replace with dummy:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows | AppInit_DLLs

Files to delete:
C:\:c_125j.nls
C:\WINDOWS\ddnmq1.dll

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

C. Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop.
  • Under "Script file to execute" choose "Input Script Manually".
  • Now click on the Magnifying Glass icon which will open a new window titled "View/edit script"
  • Paste the text copied to clipboard into this window by pressing (Ctrl+V).
  • Click Done
  • Now click on the Green Light to begin execution of the script
  • Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.
D. The Avenger will automatically do the following:
  • It will Restart your computer. ( In cases where the code to execute contains "Drivers to Unload", The Avenger will actually restart your system twice.)
  • On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
  • After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avenger’s actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
  • The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.
4) Launch Notepad, and copy/paste the box below into a new text file. Save it as Options.txt on your Desktop.

RegSearch Options File

[Search]
c_125j
ddnmq1
5C15B50D-02E4-6E93-05CD-88C7AEC4A4C7
aswt
[Exclude]

[Options]
Filter=KVDLUI

Download Registry Search and extract it. Doubleclick the icon to run and click on "Import...". Select the file you created above. Click "OK" and Registry Search will search the Registry and report what it finds. Post that here.

5) Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following if still present:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
O2 - BHO: Class - {5C15B50D-02E4-6E93-05CD-88C7AEC4A4C7} - C:\WINDOWS\ddnmq1.dll (file missing)
O4 - Global Startup: winlogin.exe

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you click Fix Checked!

6) Now reboot into Safe Mode.
This can be done tapping the F8 key as soon as you start your computer
You will be brought to a menu where you can choose to boot into safe mode.
Make sure you choose the option without networking support.

Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again.
Double-click smitfraudfix.cmd.
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.
You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".
The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

7) Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply along with a fresh HJT log by using Add/Reply. Also post the regsearch log.
