I inherited a laptop.  I wanted to upgrade it from Win7 to Win10, and I discovered that there are ZERO bytes free on the 111 GB hard drive.  But for some reason, it won't let me delete ANYTHING.

I need to do this now while I can still do it for free (by Friday).

What am I doing wrong?

Since there is no free space on disk, I can't even install Macrium Reflect to create a disk image before doing the upgrade.  So I'm really in a bind here.

This might be a stupid question, but are you a "standard" user on the computer? If yes, acquire the admin username and password and then try deleting/uninstalling stuff.

Also, if you're not worried about loosing anything on that laptop, you can burn Windows 10 on CD or USB and then boot your PC to that CD or USB to install windows 10. This will also make your HDD clean and fresh.

Is the hdd the original hdd? If so, it likely has a recovery partition. You may be able to reinstall Windows 7 using what is on the recovery partition.

Do you have the means to create a disk or flash drive with the means to reformat the hdd or use it to transfer files to another drive or delete them using another computer?

Btw, when you try to delete a file, make sure the file is NOT open otherwise its not going to let you delete them. Also, if its still not letting you delete those files, I doubt that it will let you move them... However, get a flash drive or  a free cloud account (GDrive, Dropbox etc.) and try uploading your pictures/files  to a cloud or on your flash drive. Save whatever you can.

What's anything mean? Software, documents, video, photos, or other kinds of things? You need to uninstall software first and then wipe over its left. It is weird that you cannot delete those files (documents, photos) you created.

Yeah "anything" means, you personal stuff, stuff that you care about. If you don't care about your personal stuff, go ahead and do a clean install (I'd recommend it at this point.)

There's only one user account, and it has administrator-level privileges and is not password protected.

What you’re saying sounds to me like “doing a clean install from a flash drive will first reformat your disk”.  But surely you don’t mean that, so I don’t understand you.

Do you mean that if I reinstall Windows 7, I may recover the lost ability to delete files?  Because if that’s not what you mean, I don’t understand why you would suggest I reinstall Windows 7, since what I want is to install Windows 10.

Yes, I have several high-capacity flash drives, and I can download the Windows media creation tool here.

Ordinarily I would be able to use the media creation to to either upgrade to Windows 10 or do a clean install of Windows 10, but not in this case, precisely because I don’t have the requisite free space on disk.

And yes, when I have the time I can easily transfer files using my univertsal drive adapter.

But I don’t have the time to do that now.  It’ll take a while for me to comb through this data and see what I want to save, so given the deadline for the free Windows upgrade, that will have to wait until later.

I DIDN’T create them.  As I said, I inherited this laptop.  But I agree, it’s weird I can’t delete them.

Naturally, I knew better than to try that.

I would need a cloud service with a large capacity to do that, and cloud or flash drive, copying that much data would takes hours, so I would prefer to put that off until later, so I can get in under the wire on the upgrade.

A completely full hard drive and inability to perform functions suggests a possibly infected system. It would not be wise to try to upgrade an infected OS to Win10. Certainly 111GB is small for a Windows 7 system, does it truly have only a 120GB HDD? Or just a 111GB C: partition?

I'm assuming there isn't anything in the Recycle that can be deleted? Can you run Disk Cleanup with the Clean up system files option and see if it functions?

I was thinking/ assuming that whatever data was on the computer was not yours....the givers....and was of no value to you.

In order to upgrade you need Windows 7 installed for the upgrade to be free.

Later versions of Windows 10 only requires the product key of Windows 7 to do a clean install. You can pull the key with produkey keyfinder.

“We have received a lot of feedback from Insiders on making it easier to activate Windows 10 on devices that take advantage of the free upgrade offer to genuine Windows by using existing Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 product keys. If you install this build of the Windows 10 Insider Preview on a PC and it doesn’t automatically activate, you can enter the product key from Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 used to activate the prior Windows version on the same device to activate Windows 10 by going to Settings > Update & security > Activation and selecting Change Product Key. If you do a clean install of Windows 10 by booting off the media, you can also enter the product key from prior Windows versions on qualifying devices during setup.”

Or being Windows 7, there should be a COA sticker with the product key, unless it has been upgraded from, say, Vista.

I was thinking/ assuming that whatever data was on the computer was not yours....the givers....and was of no value to you.

The data was NOT mine.  It was my brother's.  He died, and I inherited his computer.  So I don't know what is on his old laptop, but I can see there are a lot of photos and some songs he wrote, so I want to keep all that stuff for later perusal.  But that will take some time.  And also, if I can use his old laptop, then I'll have something of his with me all the time to remind me of him.  So that's why I want to do the upgrade first, but also retain all of his data and his laptop.

I'm assuming there isn't anything in the Recycle that can be deleted? Can you run Disk Cleanup with the Clean up system files option and see if it functions?

OK, I ran Disk Cleanup with the Clean up system files option, and it said I could free up 1.71 GB of disk space.  So I said OK, do it.

So with the 709 MB of space freed up previously by emptying the Recycle Bin (see above), that should come to 2.419 GB of free disk space.

But for some reason, the system says it's only 1.06 GB.

If you do a clean install of Windows 10 by booting off the media, you can also enter the product key from prior Windows versions on qualifying devices during setup.”

https://www.thurrott.com/windows/windows-10/6815/microsoft-will-now-let-windows-10-upgraders-use-windows-7-8-or-8-1-product-key-to-activate

I already have the product key.  So thank you for the link to the article about newer editions of Windows 10 that will allow installation with such a product key.

However, with respect to the other link you provided: I seem to recall reading a few years back that key crack programs were often a conduit for some of the worst malware.  Not that I'm an expert on the subject.
