Use the Media Creation Tool. It's for 8.1 which you should be upgraded to.

thanks don't have any disks to burn it on so I have ordered myself a flash drive a 8 GB one that I will install it on, phew I thought I was going to have to buy windows all over again.  so if I ever need to re install it on my computer I would just insert the flash drive into the usb instead of putting in the CD?

Yes, but if you purchased Windows 8 then you will need to input your key during install. If the computer came pre-installed with Windows 8 or 8.1 from the OEM then the key is embedded in firmware and would automatically be activated once online.

is it ok that I already have this key in use on my computer? I just want to download windows 8 copy onto the flash drive cos I have lost my windows 8 CD. does it formate the harddrive itself in the installation process so I can boot windows off the flash drive?

Yes, the key can still be in use. In fact you do not need a key to start the download from the Media Creation Tool. You also have the option to download an iso file you can use later to burn to DVD or create a bootable USB flash drive using Rufus.

Glad you found your disk.
