Hi people ...

Im posting this trying to help out my 15 year old who has a gaming pc that was built at xmas 2016 by him.

I have some pc knowledge but ive hit a wall on this one!!

His PC has the following spec:

Gigabyte GA H81M S2H Motherboard

Intel I5 4460 (with stock cooler)

Zotac GTX 970 Graphics card

8 GB Hyper X fury Ram

500 watt power supply 80+ (EVGA)

1TB Barracuda Hard Drive

HYNIX 250 GB SSD

Running on Windows 10 ( 64bit )

it has developed the following issues which i will try and list in order that they happened. ( Started on Friday )

The pc started to lose the back ( Mobo ) USB inputs

Then PC started to re-boot itself randomly and appeared to be stuck in a boot loop for 10/15 seconds

Then it developed the dreaded blue screen " unmountable_boot_volume" error  - boot-up was set from the SSD

so we did the following to try and sort it out:

Virus scanned the PC with several tools

Disconnected the SSD and installed a new Win10 on the Hard Drive ( which was just used for storage )

Its booted fine from the hard drive and the blue screen issue went away...so possible corrupted SSD ?????

However it still loses the back USB's and randomly turns itself off... Ive been helping him since last night and its switched itself off maybe 15/20 times in 24hours.

I have no idea if this is a motherboard or power supply issue lol ????

Im keen to get some advice from anybody who may be able to help before i have to shell out on a pc engineer and a new motherboard/power supply for him!! ( although i have a feeling i may have too!! )

Any hints / tips / advice would be gratefully recieved !! Thanks in advance to anyone taking the time to read this

Simon

Would you be willing to try "bench/test build?"

On another computer if need be, download the beep and "light" codes for that specific motherboard.  By partial I mean after motherboard/power supply, RAM sticks, are you using PS/2 or USB keyboard & mouse?, internals such as HD, cd-dvd player[s], leave all external devices off during this internal testing.

After all of the above passes, concentrate on testing all usb ports for a while with just one known good device in Windows Normal and Windows Safe Mode [with or without Networking].  Test each usb ports quite a while, give each port time to either work or fail.

Check Control Panel's Device Manager and make sure usb stuff has no red or yellow flags.

Somewhere within Control Panel's Power settings is a place that one can set usb and other devices to power down [or off] if not used within certain time limits -- I recommend all such devices not be set to time out.

Unless you want Wake Up On Lan, Wake Up on KB or MSE movement -- consider turning those off for now.

While you're in UEFI or BIOS, I recommend turning Fast Boot off, you get a better post checkup & report that way.

BTW, scuttlebutt from other gamers indicate PS/2 keyboard and PS/2 mouse as being the fastest combo, faster than USB, and some even say: often more reliable than wireless.

A test build may be a problem as i dont think the 2 pc's i have are compatable with his ...

he is using a USB keyboard and mouse ( Razer black widow & Redraggon mouse )

there are no flags appearing in device manager , all drivers are showing as up to date.

nothing is set to powerdown , and the usb's are not set to allow the PC to powersave on them either.

There appears to be no beeps on boot from the motherboard , i cant hear any anyway :)

Thanks for taking the time to post :)

Follow Hamlius' advice, he won't steer you wrong.  BTW, my bench/test build idea was only aimed at the errant computer.  I only mentioned another working computer to download the beep and "light" codes that apply to the errant motherboard in the errant computer.  However, since Hamlius is in here, follow his advice :)

Well...I don't see anything that points to a problem, other than the O/S.  For a 1-day old O/S install, you seem to have a number of O/S problems...which makes me wonder when/why Win 10 was put on this system.  XMAS is now 7 months past...has this system been troublesome for 7 months?

From my small perspective...this system should not be having any problems and I don't see any pointers screaming at any hardware items.

Have any critical Windows Updates been installed?

Aside from that and running the sfc /scannow command...I just don't know how to approach it.

But...I would NOT leap to the conclusion that the motherboard is bad.  I'd start with the fact that the O/S is where the problem lies.

FWIW:  Unmountable boot volume errors...are routine with all versions of Windows.  See if the following can help.

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-other_settings/unmountablebootvolume-windows-10/55301b61-d27b-47e3-871b-404c61df19a5?auth=1

The folks in the BC Win 10 Support forum can probably provide some info on that situation/error.

Louis

I think you could by correct about the o/s looking at the error reports , but i just dont get how a 1day install could be throwing up so many errors.

As far as i know the last time it updated was a few weeks ago.

Ive looked at the link previously and it didnt really help lol

I will keep trying..
