For some reason, lately the SVCHOST , one of up to eight, is using 25% of CPU and driving the third core on and i3 crazy, near 100% continuously.  If I use the task manager to stop the process, the unit locks up.  Not run into this before.

Have you traced which service this svchost is controlling?

Can't tell what service, says   "svchost.exe"  user name "system" path name  "windows\system32\svchost.exe"  session "0"  .  It hasn't reappeared today and I suspect the windows update may have something to do with it.  I did an update after a shutdown.  Avoided the update for GWX by skipping the update number ending in 5583.

- You can safely install ALL "Recommended" Updates. The dreaded "GWX" Update is an "optional" one and has the name "KB 3035583". Although I would recommend to install the "optional" KB 2852386

- Open "Task Manager" (Services tab). Highlight "Wuauserv ", right click and choose "Go to Process". If you are directed to the "svchost.exe" process with the high CPU then it's a Windows Update (WU) problem.

- Everytime you have a WU problem, read the info at

- Keep us posted.

I found a dreaded download/update that didn't install properly. Backtracked and did a retry and was successful.  No reoccurence  yet .
