In the past few days the laptop's svchost.exe has been chewing up cpu at 40-50% on a continuous basis.

I became aware of it because my cooling fan is running all the time. I explored it with  "process explorer" and it showed that the culprit is the svchost.exe.

I  unsuccessfully tried killing the app. The PC informed me that the app could not be accessed (or found) for that matter.

I also have noticed that on different startups, the TID is different and that the CSwitch Delta is constantly changing.

Whereas yesterday the PID was 296, today it's 472 (host process for windows)!! Yesterday there was a ntdll.user thread - today the address is 0x0!!

I ran MalwareBytes (real time protection) yesterday and it found one PUP which it quarantined.

I have no idea what to do and any help would be greatly appreciated.

p22002970.gif Please download Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) to your desktop.
There are 2 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.

rKill.exe: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/10/
iExplore.exe (renamed rKill.exe): http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/11/

Thank you for the response Broni, and thank you for the assistance. The PC  svchost is still using approx. 50% - 24 hrs a day!

I have downloaded and run all the apps that you requested me to. For sake of keeping the string manageable and neat (readable for those wanting to follow the progress) I am linking to all the logs as you requested in the order that you requested that I post them. I hope that is okay. If you need them copied and pasted into this string - then I can do that also (if you so request).

I linked two MBAM scans.the first, the most recent scan that came up clean and the second - the scan that I did the day before that found 1 PUP.

Thinking back to when I first started noticing the fan running constantly - was just a few days ago after uploading (and connecting to) Adobe "bridge" and opening an Adobe Creative cloud account.

I also noticed (just yesterday) an notice a warning that said my Windows update status was not set to "automatic".

I prefer to do updates at my convenience so as to not accidentally loose any documents that I may be working on when I leave my PC unattended for a period of time. The Windows update setting has been set like that for some while and I don't feel that the problem is there. I don't have any critical updates pending. Only 5 optional ones.

Could the Adobe changes have anything to do with my problem? Mhhhhh, I wonder!

Added notation,

Microsoft did another update yesterday and part of it showed as registry items. (21200 was the # indicated. After that update, the PC seems to be running normal again!!  Not sure is the update corrected that or? (r-kill perhaps?). I noticed a missing service in the r-kill log.

Checking Windows Service Integrity:

 * TBS [Missing Service]

Is this anything to worry about?

After the update, the 496 scvhost ran quite high cpu usage for a while but then gradually came down (over a period of 5 or 10 minutes). Initially the private bytes (by the time I started paying attention to it) was at 414,020 but eventually adjusted to one tenth of that. Also - the working set initiated at somewhere around 246,216K and just like the private bytes reduced dramatically. I watched the 496 svchost in action within process explorer (on first boot up after update)  and initially it was lightly hi-lighted in green (the only svchost doing that) and the hi-lite color  eventually changed to a barely noticeable pinkish hi-lite. When it eventually was consuming no more cpu than any of the other svchosts running (.01) - there was no hi-lite at all.

Lastly, when shutting the PC down previously, the PC had to wait for service host to shut down first before the PC shutting down. Now,  I haven't notice that action either.

So far the system idle process is at approx 95-98% (when not using any internet services or programs) and has been stable like that for a few hours now.Problem solved?
