I use an assembled desktop with two 2 Tb Western Digital hard drives,Intel
Core i3 3.2Ghz processor and 8 Gb RAM running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit;

DVD-RW: LITE-ON iHAS-124

Antivirus:  Avira Free Antivirus;

Firewall: Zonealarm Free Firewall

DVD-RW drive is not able to write to DVD-RWs. Usually the writer hangs. Trying to open  DVD-RWs by rightclick in My Computer  yields hourglass symbol. DVD-RW writer was changed with another copy of the same model without improvement. Brand new DVD-RW showed same result. CD-RWs read and write properly.

Equally poor result with burning sofware Nero 7 Essentials, Ashampoo, Deep Burner and Windows burning software.

Games and possibly other programs often put bad blocks in their software to prevent copying....as I just found out by doing a search for CdRom0, has a bad block.

Other than that check for new driver for the CD-ROM drive.

Zone Alarm problem is likely not related to the other one. It can be a problem to uninstall completely. There is an uninstall tool available at ZoneAlarm Uninstall Tool Download

Be sure to read all instructions before using.

Run this program and post the results:

Thanks for responding. A friend who has some knowledge of software issues looked at the machine. He felt that several OS files had become corrupt, caused possiblly by abrupt shutdown of the machine after successive UPS failures. He did some work on the machine and removed some programmes. I removed  Zonealam which had repeatedly given me trouble in the past as well. I used the Zonealarm uninstall tool,  which I had already, for the purpose. He replaced Zonealarm with Tiny Firewall. He gave access to Internet Explorer and Firefox in the firewall but Chrome only has access in the Allow Outgoing mode.  He replaced Avira Free Antivirus with Avast Free Antivirus. The end result of the changes is admittedly less convenient  but more tranquil for me.

Thanks for responding. The Windows 7 firewall is a good firewall and customizable. I really see no need for replacing it.

If you are using a router, you have that firewall too, if it is activated.
