long story short, basically i was very briefly hit by cerber virus (am clean now)
only very few files were affected and i recovered what i needed and deleted rest (movies, mp3's)

anyway after cleaning system and restarting i noticed my pc was slow
also my windows partition had about 3gb less in space
i managed to find where this came from and it was a folder in C:\Users\'user'\AppData\Roaming
can't remember name, started with E and it had 2 files about 1.5gb each
when i tried to delete them it said that some .exe running was using one of them
can't remember the name of it as i terminated it immediately but description said something like Realtek HD audio

i only restarted pc once ever since but same thing happened
i don't even restart my pc i put it to sleep cause i have a lot of stuff running
normally i'd just format and do a fresh install but i have too many programs/settings that i would have to reinstall

Edit: Moved topic from Windows 7 to the more appropriate forum. ~ Animal

p22002970.gif Please download Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) to your desktop.
There are 2 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.

rKill.exe: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/10/
iExplore.exe (renamed rKill.exe): http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/11/

  • Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.

I just wanted to update my first post to be more clear since I did not have this information when I originally created thread

excuse my poor editing skills but you can see in image below the location from where the .exe file runs

first time i noticed it created 2 files each around 1.5gb in the Ethash folder (this time only one was created before i force end the process from task manager)

i wanna add, i do not have realtek in control panel add/remove programs and i don't know how to stop this exe from running at startup

if that exe is left running it makes my computer choppy with my cpu spiking (not sure what it does at this moment since I'm no PC expert)

anybody that has more information about what it can be please let me know

Hello!

Here is what I found.

According to Bleeping Computer:

RTDCPL.EXE Information This is a valid program that is required to run at startup.

This program is required to run on startup in order to benefit from its functionality or so that the program will work.

  • RtDCpl.exe
  • Command
    %programfiles%\Realtek\Audio\HDA\RtDCpl.exe
  • Description
Installed with the driver package for Realtek Semiconductor High Definition Audio and associated with the control panel for it.
  • File Location
    %programfiles%\Realtek\Audio\HDA\RtDCpl.exe
  • Startup Type
This startup entry is started automatically from a Run, RunOnce, RunServices, or RunServicesOnce entry in the registry.
  • HijackThis Category
  • Note
%ProgramFiles% refers to the Program Files folder. The path to this folder is C:\Program Files\ or C:\Program Files (X86)\ depending on whether the version of Windows or the program being installed is 32-bit or 64-bit.

Honestly, I'm not sure what to make of this. Maybe a problem with your sound drivers? You can try downloading Speccy and use it to find your sound card model. A driver update for them might do the trick. Download link: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/speccy/

Please be aware that some driver updates may cause issues with your computer. Do your research and download the drivers only from a trusted website. I AM NOT AN EXPERT WITH COMPUTER DRIVERS.

Happy Surfing!

did some prior googling myself on this and thanks for your post

i already disabled this from running on my computer so it's fine for now

it caused no problems prior to my minor cerber infection so not sure what to make of it

doesn't seem like this is needed at all, my sound does not need it to run

maybe it got infected with another malware from that cerber infection website

will do more scans next week and keep this topic updated

Sounds good. Who knows, It could be a rouge version of the process or injected with malicious code.

You can check the process file to see if it is a rouge by seeing when the file was created. If it is not matching a time of your last driver or Windows Update or two files of similar names exist, it could be a rouge.

There is only one way I know of to see if it was injected with malicious code. Put the source file into https://www.virustotal.com/. It should spot any malicious code within it.

If the file and/or process is any of those, I cannot help you further. I'm not skilled in that and I may mess up the computer.

Good luck!

Edit: Just saw the size of the file. VirusTotal won't be able to process it. It does look suspicious though. Try emailing Realtek's support and show them that picture. With the name of the file they should be able to determine what it is.

p22002970.gif Update Firefox to the current version.

p22002970.gif Update Adobe Flash Player: http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/
Make sure you UN-check Yes, install McAfee Security Scan Plus

NOTE 1: Beginning with Adobe Flash Version 11.3, the universal installer includes the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of the Flash Player.
NOTE 2: While installing make sure you UN-check any extra garbage which wants to install alongside.

p22002970.gif Update your Java version here: http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
Alternate download: http://www.filehippo.com/search?q=java

Note 1: UNCHECK any pre-checked toolbar and/or software offered with the Java update. The pre-checked toolbars/software are not part of the Java update.
Note 2: If you're running 64-bit system make sure you install BOTH, 32-bit and 64-bit Java.

=====================================

Your computer is clean p3879546.jpg

1. This step will remove all cleaning tools we used, it'll reset restore points (so you won't get reinfected by accidentally using some older restore point) and it'll make some other minor adjustments...
This is a very crucial step so make sure you don't skip it.
Download 51a5ce45263de-delfix.pngDelFix by Xplode to your desktop. Delfix will delete all the used tools and logfiles.

Double-click Delfix.exe to start the tool.
Make sure the following items are checked:

  • Activate UAC (optional; some users prefer to keep it off)
  • Remove disinfection tools
  • Create registry backup
  • Purge System Restore
  • Reset system settings

Now click "Run" and wait patiently.
Once finished a logfile will be created. You don't have to attach it to your next reply.

2. Make sure Windows Updates are current.

3. If any trojans, rootkits or bootkits were listed among your infection(s), make sure, you change all of your on-line important passwords (bank account(s), secured web sites, etc.) immediately!

4. Check if your browser plugins are up to date.
Firefox - https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/plugincheck/
other browsers: https://browsercheck.qualys.com/ (click on "Scan without installing plugin" and then on "Scan now")

5. Download, and install WOT (Web OF Trust): http://www.mywot.com/. It'll warn you (in most cases) about dangerous web sites.

6. Run Malwarebytes "Quick scan" once in a while to assure safety of your computer.

7. Run Temporary File Cleaner (TFC), AdwCleaner and Junkware Removal Tool (JRT) weekly (you need to redownload these tools since they were removed by DelFix).

8. Download and install Secunia Personal Software Inspector (PSI): http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/. The Secunia PSI is a FREE security tool designed to detect vulnerable and out-dated programs and plug-ins which expose your PC to attacks. Run it weekly.

9. (optional) If you want to keep all your programs up to date, download and install FileHippo Update Checker.
The Update Checker will scan your computer for installed software, check the versions and then send this information to FileHippo.com to see if there are any newer releases.

10. When installing\updating ANY program, make sure you always select "Custom " installation, so you can UN-check any possible "drive-by-install" (foistware), like toolbars etc., which may try to install along with the legitimate program. Do NOT click "Next" button without looking at any given page.

That option does only one thing: The tool displays (if enabled) file extensions known.

Broni, you sir are legend! I'm very happy that i found about bleepingcomputer

much appreciated and nice too see there are good people like yourself out there

never thought i could get infected since i am very careful but from every bad thing there is a lesson to be learned

gonna share how this happened and maybe raise some awareness that could help others

-i wanted to download a file called d3d9.dll (it was for an older game that i wanted to play in window mode)

-when i clicked to download it was blocked by my browser, but i allowed it since i figured nothing could happen

-even if it was virus or malware file, i wouldn't just download and run it before making sure it's ok

-BIG mistake, without even downloading or running anything after allowing that site i got some error messages

-can't remember exactly what they said, just some random pop up screens that i closed immediately

-after that i noticed some .cerber files and decrypt my files in random locations on my drive

-luckily i did not lose any important data and only very few files got infected

what to learn from this

-don't visit or access suspicious websites (not that this was suspicious but still, be careful when surfing)

-back up any important data in case you get infected by nasty ransomwares like cerber

-have more and better security and keep your programs (including windows) up to date

i'm still not sure how i got that infected realtekHD that i posted here http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/619951/weird-malware-or-virus/#entry4048625

i renamed the malicious file to rthdcplTEST.exe and kept the whole folder as it was during scans but nothing was found for this specific file

edit: apparently it's some sort of bitcoin miner or some ransomware file

i didn't even have any realtek stuff installed so maybe this was fake just like the process that was running in task manager

now I deleted the entire folder Help (which only contained Realtek HD folder) from users\'current user'\appdata\local

i did add it to .rar before doing this in case it can somehow help or give information about the virus so if anybody needs it let me know please

hopefully my PC is clean and safe to use now

again, many thanks mr.Broni can't express how grateful I am

Great job on finding out the issue. I have been really busy as of late, so I haven't been able to respond.

I guess my hunch on the odd Realtek file was right. I just didn't know for sure and I didn't want to mess anything up.

Have a good one!
