Hello,

I recently started getting new tabs opened once every few hours while using Firefox that look identical to the attached picture. It urges me to download the file with a notification, which I refuse, obviously. But why are these tabs opening themselves?

When the tabs open, Windows Defender claims that it's defended me from an attack by Trojan:Kovter, and has quarantined it. Fine, great, but if that's true, why are the tabs returning?

I did my best to uncover the source with various anti-malware programs. No scan found anything amiss. I then installed chrome to see if the problems followed me across browsers. I'm no longer getting tabs urging me to update firefox, but instead when typing in the search bar, Malware Bytes prevented an outbound request to www.searchfusion.com, as seen in the attached log.

So now I'm worried that either my laptop or my router have either some malware or trojan that's the source of these redirect attacks. Can anyone give me some advice? Thanks in advance.

I was able to find the first instance of Windows Defender finding Kovter starting to be installed in Event Viewer. Here it is:

Windows Defender has taken action to protect this machine from malware or other potentially unwanted software.
For more information please see the following:
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=37020&name=Trojan:Win32/Kovter&threatid=2147683147&enterprise=0
  Name: Trojan:Win32/Kovter
  ID: 2147683147
  Severity: Severe
  Category: Trojan
  Path: file:_C:\Users\jgennaro\AppData\Local\Temp\vz6jDaAv.exe.part
  Detection Origin: Local machine
  Detection Type: FastPath
  Detection Source: Real-Time Protection
  User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
  Process Name: C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe
  Action: Quarantine
Action Status:  No additional actions required
  Error Code: 0x80508023
Error description: The program could not find the malware and other potentially unwanted software on this computer.
Signature Version: AV: 1.223.2446.0, AS: 1.223.2446.0, NIS: 116.10.0.0
Engine Version: AM: 1.1.12805.0, NIS: 2.1.12706.0

Perhaps because it found it in a *.part file, that means the rest of it wasn't downloaded? But I really don't know what started the download in the first place. Obviously something did, maybe even me. But why does this keep occurring when using Firefox?

Dear nasdaq,

Thanks for replying and your help. I've pasted the logs from FRST (fixlog.txt) and Adwcleaner (AdwCleaner[C3].txt).

Since resetting firefox and continuing to use chrome, I haven't gotten any more suspicious redirects or malware alerts. Perhaps it was just malicious ads on the web sites I was using, and windows defender was accurate in asserting that it had protected me from kovter. What do you think?

Best,

Charles
